The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Harry the hyena had a horrendous problem. His pack had just told him to leave them! Harry didn't think all hyenas were that hilarious. For that they disowned him as being nefarious!
He didn't laugh when they drenched him while napping. He didn't think it funny when they roared at his dancing. He didn't find it amusing when his grand ideas fail. He didn't even grin when someone ignited his tail!
He slunked away from his tribe and his home Not knowing or caring where next he would roam. That's when he met Sad Sally, who never clapped hands. They went paw in paw to form the Glum Hyena band!
Fine hints, Owen, but probably unnecessary given the repetitive nature of the letters derived from the 4 words. I loved the tale of the feral canine out of step with his kind. It must appeal to the artistic side in all of us. On another note, I appreciate the search our fellows did in finding the Argyle cartoon. I didn't realize how obscure my reference was & so apologize for the inconvenience. And yes, of course, I recognized the dwarf as Grumpy, but thought it mildly amusing to pretend it might be the "8th dwarf," Droopy, as that was my somewhat clumsy hint to that day's J word. And so I congratulate Wilbur & Sandy for cracking my puzzle & apologize again that this explanation has been more tedious than the gag. We good? ~ OMK
Owen, you're having a great poem day. Loved the ones on the Corner and the delightful one here. Fortunately, I got this morning's Jumble before I came online. Had to work a little to get the first word, and than got stuck on the third. I finally tried to solve the cartoon without it, and Voila! it worked! That gave me I O N as the circled letters of number four, and then there it was, the whole thing. That made it fun to look for the words in your limerick, and I had to laugh when I got to the end with the sweet couple walking away paw in paw. And your hints verified that I got everything correctly.
So, great start to the weekend with a very fun Jumble experience. Many thanks!

I found the Jumble pretty simple. My preference is to work it on my own without hints from anyone unless and until I feel completely stymied. So I avoid reading any comments, including Owen's poem, until I've either solved it or given up.
Thanks for the explanation, OMK. It falls in with me (and others) noticing the differences in Cornerites' areas of knowledge. What is obvious to one person is mysterious to another, right?
Right, Sandy, in this case I assumed others were either readers of the LA Times--where that particular cartoon is always just to the right of the crossword--or were at least aware that some of us are said readers. But "assumed" is the error in this case. What is that old gag about the problem when one assumes? Something about being an "ass" when one does it. How does that go?
Owen ~ Harry's individuality is a very healthy thing. He can go a long way in helping his fellow hyenas escape the adjective that lumps them all together as supercilious gloaters. I recall some Nature programs in the '80s that brought some dignity to hyenas, but then in '94 they rec'd a tremendous setback with Disney's The Lion King. That movie was lovely in so many ways, but it also did great harm in stigmatizing hyenas as a vicious minority--to be hated and scapegoated. Long live Harry! ~ OMK

OMG! I do get the LA Times, I do the puzzle in the paper, and I read all six cartoons. Every day. And I know that the top two are Family Circus and Dennis the Menace. I just never read the names of the other four, or at least not with enough attention to remember them. Well, for sure I will now remember that the name of the second one down on the left is Argyle Sweater!
Okay, so we're talking about an LA Times cartoon, Ol'Man Keith and Sandyanon? I looked up today's version and Argyle Sweater had a dog having to deal with a fire hydrant. I'm guessing that had nothing to do with whatever you guys were talking about? Okay, I'll check Argyle tomorrow and do my best to try to figure out what we're doing here. I don't want to be left out if I can help it.
Misty, go back to the Nov. 8 jumble to the comments. OMK posted a clue that sort of referred to the 3d jumble clue via that day's Argyle Sweater cartoon. Nobody figured out the connection, though we did find the cartoon.
