|| hovel, bandy, burlap, radius, labor pains. || device, placid, goatee, notify, absurd, splash, each passing day.
The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Up latish tonight and so far all I see is the j4. It gave me a little trouble, but no serious pain. I had to try solving without the fourth clue, and when I realized what the first solution word must be, that gave me the letters to work out the rest.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to the morning, a j6, and whatever Owen wishes to offer.
The hill-billy stereotype no longer exists today.
ReplyDeleteLiving in a hovel in some mountains far away.
No more the denim overhauls, with burlap underwear.
No more hardscrabble farms, no mule-pulled plowshare.
No more bandy roosters, cock-crowing out the morn.
No more mountain moonshine made from local corn.
No more growling dog with the radius of his chain.
No more corn-cob pipe used by every Jack and Jane.
Gone the lazy hill-billy, on his back-woods acre
Who takes pains to skip the pain of honest labor.
It's not politically correct to talk so, about folks.
But dang, the loss has cost a lot of silly jokes!
As I write this, I've just finished the CW, and haven't seen the J6 yet 9it's late posting). Today was a stumper for me. I got the 4 words, but had to use the hint button for the first time. Just once, tho, and with that letter I was able to get the rest, with time to write a poem before the CW was available. Now to see if the J6 is up yet.
ReplyDeleteFound J6 in the LA Times--a very appropriate cartoon for Super Bowl Sunday, including the number on the QB's jersey.
ReplyDeleteI don't usually come here on Sundays, but I guess the game day excitement woke me early, and what else is there to do before 9 am?
I'm sorry I don't know how to reproduce the J here, or I would share it. When you get to it, keep in mind that each and every day that passes following the conference championships builds more & more suspense until we reach this daddy of all the bowls.

Just posted the Sunday puzzle. It came out online really late today, and still isn't up at the Chicago Trib, my favored source. I have not even started on it myself yet. I'll try and post some hints when I finish. The rest of you pitch in a hint or two if you've already got it!
ReplyDeleteAvoiding OMK's comment until I finished the j6 because I don't want hints unless I absolutely give up. Did note that he also went to the newspaper and then quit reading the comment. (That's also why I don't read Owen's poems before I solve, unless I've thrown in the towel.)
ReplyDeleteThis jumble was a little problematic, but not a lot. I blocked on clue five, so went to the solution. With the letters I had, the first and third words were easy to see, as well as the ending of the middle word. That left only two letters to fill in, and they popped right up in combination with the two I had.
Yes, I'm sure that cartoon was picked to go with the Super Bowl. I've never been a football fan, so to me the day just means "avoid CBS". No 'offense' intended.
Owen, I really like your j4 poem, although the thought of burlap underwear gives me a mental pain.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever read Vance's "Hillbilly Elegy"? The other side of the coin.
P.S. My grandpa always talked about the "banty" rooster, which I took to be short for bantam.
DeleteNo offense taken, Sandy.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a huge sports fan myself. I have gone through periodic spurts of attention to televised football & baseball, but have rarely sustained interest. Still, the Super Bowl is to many casual viewers what Easter & Christmas are to lapsed Christians--a sort of recurring "check-in" time.
Lately, I have been a bit more regular. I think it's because the Rams are doing so well and are back in L.A. After nearly 40 years of living in SoCal I have begun to make my peace with having left my hometown team--the Rams' archrivals, the San Francisco 49ers--behind.
It has not been an easy transition. The 49ers are the only team I ever cared for as a kid. But it finally seemed overly pig-headed on my part to not recognize my geographic relocation, while feeling a need to make my peace with the team that does regular practice workouts on the UC Irvine campus, my very neighborhood.
With all these caveats, I am now (gulp) a Rams fan.
May they kick Patriot butt today!

[A sequel to the February 1st poem!]
ReplyDeleteHobbs exited the time machine with trepidation.
The time-flux kluge was sitting like an invitation.
Where did it come from? Its appearing was absurd!
But the device fit, and the time machine was cured!
Stroking his goatee, Hobbs considered options.
Twenty-first century, to his base of operations?
Or thirty-first, where he had originally been bound?
Or explore here at Omega, for what could be found?
No, back to home was safest, a placid destination,
To notify the Internet of his next planned embarkation.
Back along the chrono-line, splash views along the way,
Each passing century, then year, then day by day.
So glad Hobbs got back. Really like the way you worked up to the j6 solution and fit it in so neatly.
ReplyDeleteI do appreciate your commitment to this blog. I'm sure it's often highly inconvenient.
A beautiful resolution to Hobbs' quandary, Owen. Glad to see the "kluge" was effective!

Didn't have time to do the Jumble yesterday and just got to the six item one this afternoon--too tired to get more than one or two. But Owen's poem was a big help and I figured out the solution pretty much as Sandyanon did, guessing the first word, putting in the last three letters of the second and then getting the third, which let me fill in the rest. Don't know much about football, but was happy to get this one.
