The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Ignacio was an Eskimo, which some Eskimos would deny.
ReplyDeleteHe'd studied architecture, and purchased a supply
Of bricks and mortar, and boards for joists and studs.
He'd build a brick and wood igloo. Why? Just because!
Tribe-folk gave him no support for his igloo folly.
They would throw their taunts, at him by the volley.
Still he persisted in belief of his self-built pursuit,
Despite an adhesive that sealed to his seal-hide suit.
The Home Owners Association tried to banish him,
But zoning ordinances backed up his innovative whim.
Day by day the dome progressed, a mostly wood igloo,
Warped boards held in place, by nails -- and Ig's glue!
I am not familiar with the solution's phrase, but it makes perfect sense.

The clue words came easily, except for the first, which I had to look at for awhile before realizing that, yes, it was a word. The solution was pretty obvious once I had all the letters. It's an ok pun, though I didn't groan -- or laugh.
ReplyDeleteI know you are a harsh judge of your poems, Owen, but I think generally too harsh. Myself, I prefer a consistent meter, but can appreciate a poem without that. And I really enjoy your ability to do both silly fun subjects and to incorporate serious ideas. Today is definitely a classic example of the first.
Thank you again for your efforts. You brighten my days both here and on the Corner.
Terrific poems today, Owen, both on the Crossword and here--many thanks. I had trouble only with the third word, and so went on to see if I could get the solution without it. I did--Yay! That then gave me the third word. I love this cartoon with the detailed background of the new store with the bow tie sign and the men's suits in the window. And loved the way the store owner was dressed up in a classy suit. Great cartoon with a fun solution. Have a good weekend coming up, everybody.
ReplyDeleteI’m just here for the poetry! Great job!
ReplyDeleteOMK: I thought the phrasing slightly awkward today. You'll notice I added a word to the final solution, since "will build to suit" (future tense?) is the more commonly read phrase in ads or real estate signs.
ReplyDeleteSandy: Thank you for thinking my judgement too harsh. I judge compared to the ideal I see in my mind. You judge compared to something less, thank goodness! If my assessments are ever greater than anyone elses, I'll know my ego is getting out of hand, or my ideals are getting sloppy!
BTW, JOIST was a new word to me. I probably knew it once (I had a class on architectural drafting in H.S.), but wouldn't have known it if the online program hadn't let me know when I shuffled the letters right.
SwampCat and anyone else here just for the poetry: From the bottom of my heart, thank you!
I had to travel to the VA in St Pete for my blood samples prior to next week's exam. I grabbed a latte and lemon-cranberry muffin and found a seat.
ReplyDeleteBANISH was my difficult J. I found BUILD and the solution followed.
Owen once explained his thoughts about meter. I forget but I'd say don't let it spoil a good poem. Ironically I've enjoyed Owen's C's and B- stuff - he tends to stick some rib ticklers into to those C's.
