The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

If you still want to get back to the earlier May 5 page (with the J4), you can try my route. It's roundabout, but it worked for me.
Go back to May 4 and scroll down to the bottom left side of the page. Click on "Newer Post." That should do it.
As to the professor's crime, I like your suggestions. Like you, I have served on several faculties from coast to coast and have found most of my colleagues to be scrupulously honest people. I knew one dean who abused his authority & was fired for doing so, but of the hundreds I knew he was the one rotten apple.

  2. A neat cartoon, Owen, well chosen, with all his pipes drowning with H2O!

  3. It was late, the dance had ended at eleven.
It was time for all the kids to be home.
But Susie was still out, and so was Kevin.
And neither was the type known to roam.

    Was Kevin's pick-up parked in lover's lane?
Was Susie being more cuddly, or chatty?
Or was there a crash on a road slick with rain?
Bodies wedged in a truck's crumpled chassis?

No, a hamburger joint's delay had beckoned
A detour avoiding a flooded stretch of road.
Lost when they weren't where they reckoned.
But at last down the pipeline home they rode!

  4. Immediately after the last comment, there's a link to "Post a Comment". The line immediately below that is one listing
    "[blank] - - - Home - - - Older Post"
(the [blank] replaced by "Newer post" once it's available.)
If I had more control, I'd make those links bright red and 36-point type size! Instead they're a washed-out gray and the same size as everything else on the page. I wish Anon-T or some other guru could tell me how to make that change.

  5. Well, this was Monday easy. Solution was funny punny. Not too much to say.

I don't know how similar people's systems are, but under the Blog Archive heading at the right of the page, I could and still can, see both May 5 Sunday, and May 5, so it's easy to toggle back and forth as desired.

  6. Thank you for the suggestions, Ol'Man Keith and Sandyanon. I'll try them out a little later when I have a bit more time.

I loved this morning's Jumble--got all four words without any work at all, and got the solution immediately. A great way to start a Monday (also got the Sudoku and Kenken, Yay!). Nice mirror in the bathroom, and cute cap on backwards, on the kid in the cartoon. Fun seeing the phone in the cranky woman's hand. And since I had everything in place, I really enjoyed your poem, Owen.

  7. Forgot to say that I loved and appreciated your comment about professors, Ol'Man Keith, and am so glad that you've had the same good experience that I've had. Aren't we lucky to have had this profession!

  8. Misty, we are indeed!
Like many in the arts, I did not start out to be a professor, but nowadays the one sure occupation for professional artists, musicians, and theater folk is in the university. In this respect, higher education has replaced the Church. In the university we can practice our disciplines & have enough free time to take on outside professional work.
I started teaching in New England (Williams College), then taught on and off in Eastern schools (CT & VA).
I don't believe in fate, yet, somehow I wound up at UCI.
Why do I connect fate with Irvine? Because the first real trip I ever took away from my home (San Francisco) was to what was then the "Irvine Ranch."
This was in 1953, for the Boy Scout Jamboree.

  9. I had a lot of trouble with #4 then it popped.

Ironic comments about the professors with the latest admissions scandal. I guess plagiarism is the honesty issue. I hear that there are sophisticated software to detect it .

  10. Misty, if you can't get to yesterday's J4 here is a line just made for you

She looks like a James Joyce novel, only meaner!"(She being the"WYRM")

For those who slogged through Joyce I just had to laugh . Talk about a pawky sense of humor from our resident poet.

  11. Plagiarism is indeed the problem, WC, sometimes (rarely) among faculty, but more of a problem among students.
But most would-be offenders have caught on. The software doesn't need to be very sophisticated. If anyone is foolish enough to copy a published source word-for-word, the professor doesn't need to go much further to spot the original than to Google it.
