  1. Wilbur, I certainly did enjoy your tv poem; it brought back memories. I remember Gabby Hayes pretty well. Wasn't he with Roy Rogers? Never was too fond of Hopalong.

But you know, what the date in your poem reminded me of was something else entirely. I'm a few years older than you, and maybe starting around the fall of 1951 or early 1952, a popular phrase in my grade school classes (and everywhere else) was "I like Ike!"

    Anyway, very enjoyable poem.

  2. Ah, yes--"I Like Ike"! I think I'm even a bit older, as that was the slogan I recall from junior high.
For some reason, I connect it in memory with the atom bomb drills we did, all huddled in the halls with our arms over the napes of our necks.

FLN Misty & Wilbur ~ I posted late replies to you yesternight.

  3. "Kind Bill"

    Bill was making his will,
not an easy job to to fill.
    He tried to be witty
    by leaving his kitty
    to his cousin Sally,
    as a funny finale.
    No gift would be hidden
    if you did his bidding.
And so their wit and will
made his family fit his bill.

  4. P.S.

    My poem was too curt,
    I forgot to add "blurt."

  5. "A Bitter Pill"
    -or-
    "What Now?"
    For his finale, the magician
meant to to produce a bunny--
just as he'd done in his audition.
But he shocked himself--it wasn't funny!--
    when out blurted
another species from his shirt, and
he ended up with the kitten
    his mom instead had hidden.
    Mee-OW!

  7. Loved seeing that great picture of you with two of your former students (were they?) on Facebook, Ol'Man Keith. You look so young! Good for you!

  8. Thanks, Misty!
Yes, they were my students. My pride!
Meghan (on your right) was an undergrad and now a produced playwright. Amanda was a grad student, now an award-winning director.
I "look so young" because I was still just a septuagenarian when we took the shot.

  9. Well I'm not the oldest. My birthday is next Saturday (76) and Misty, as I recall, turns 76 in December.

I saw the traumatic, coma-like visage in the Yankees faces last night. When baseball not only has drama but poetic justice it is sublime.

As I read Misty's poem I noticed the omission but before I could get here and blurt it out, voila.

OMK, I can only say "smooth". Tom Boswell(of Sam Johnson fame) had a diary where he penned a poem every day. I think the burden of the J's may actually make it better.

    You truly have become Owen-esque.

I'll maybe take a shot at a rhymer.

ps, thanks for the (FLN)kudos and especially pleased to bring Sandy et al "Back to the Fifties"

  10. Ps, anyone out there thinking they're too young, feel free to jump in. And...

    To rhyme is indeed sublime

  11. Thank you very much, Wilbur. Generous words, coming from a real champ yourself.

I think regularity of posting is the greatest aid to honing whatever skills we might have.
OTOH we mustn't get into the mindset that a daily poem is an obligation. The more it feels dutiful, the less fun it is.
I've got to remember that, and make myself takes some days off.

    PS
. James Boswell, I think. Jimmy or Jamey, in place of "Tom."

  12. My goodness, Wilbur--we're almost the same age. Well, I'm still younger, a bit, aren't I?

  13. A bit late, ok, very late. I started but a trip to Walmart for a ball and chain* interrupted.

blurt, kitty, finale, hidden, fit the bill.

It was to be the finale, last hand of the night
Captains and Majors and Colonels too
Betting and adding to the kitty just to view
Ol'e Lieutenant Wilbur's hand was a glorious sight

And when Captain Carlisle blurted out "Call"
A hidden Ace. " Full Boat!", and that was all all
She wrote. And it was fitting that the bill
Saw deep frowns but a big smile on Lieutenant Will.

    * No not a replacement for Betsy's but for my trailer hitch apparatus.

Ps, yes, Misty, two months. I remember you from kindergarten. Ok, that little girl was blond.
