Wow, this solution just popped right out as I looked at and read the cartoon. Nice play on words. Went ahead to unscramble the clues anyway. My only problem was clue three, which took a minute or so of pondering, even when I knew the two key letters. In any case, fun!
ReplyDeleteYou PDT folk always beat me. I solved everything last Tuesday except I just realized: The Saturday Jumble. I got 1,2,4 like you Sandy; then the riddle-solution popped once the letters were available. Then I knew what I needed in #3.

As I peddled up to the crest of the hill
I looked to the sky and began to ponder
Was that a rocket soaring into the wild blue yonder?
No, just an osprey with a perch in his bill.
I stopped on the side of road to listen
To the stereo, a little knickknack
I carried in the bicycle's back pack.
Thankful for what I had not what I was missing.
Believe it or not, I felt like a human skyrocket back then. Ah, the illusions of youth...

I had a transistor stereo unit
that added favorite tapes to the fun
by letting me time the steps to my music.
I had a knack for scoping the route yonder
and planning my distance and speed
without pausing to consciously ponder
how to time it, how to get the right bead,
but easily & with grace to match my music best
in perfect synchronization with each hill's crest.

Was your "little knickknack" part of the same Japanese revolution as my "transistor"? Those made a huge difference in how we played tapes at the end of the 20th C. My first was an Aiwa.

"Mario's Adventure"
ReplyDeleteOn a hill my good friend Mario
was listening to his stereo.
He was close to the top of the crest
and decided he'd go on a quest.
Adventure was his knack,
so he fetched his special backpack
and went back to that hill up yonder
where the view gave him strength to ponder
why not use that thing in his pocket
to let himself just sky-rocket.
The grand scenery left him mute
as he landed his gold parachute.
Misty ~ I really like this one. I get a picture of your Mario meditating and taking the long view of the landscape spread below him.
ReplyDeleteThe final picture reminds me of the recent sightings of "jetpack man" by airline pilots over LAX.
In today's LA Times there is even speculation, based on one RL experience, that a man could fly as high as 6,000 feet if he used a parachute to descend (after his fuel supply would have been exhausted).

ReplyDeleteOl Man Keith, it never occurred to me that I may have made Mario a "jet-pack"man or whatever they call them. But it sure sounds that way, except that he flies vertically and not horizontally.
So far it hasn't looked like these jetpacks do much horizontal flight. If these recent stories are true, they use up all their power just making altitutde.
ReplyDeleteI kinda lean toward the theory that the LAX sightings are drones--with mannequin pilots. But nobody knows for sure.
The FBI is investigating.
I'm sure Mario's intentions are peaceful.
