FLN: Misty ~ We never got an official conclusion to my passing out. I sat on the curb outside the bus with my head down between my knees for about a half hour.
ReplyDeleteSomebody muttered "Too much oxygen" in Spanish.
We were fully expecting some kind of reaction when we first went up several thousand feet, but nothing at all happened then. Instead we figured it was the shock of the extra-rich air when I came back down that caught up with me.
Yes, I join you now in appreciating a glass of wine at dinner. Gin and tonic is my favorite summertime beverage, although I sometimes enjoy a vodka martini or a Tanqueray Gibson.
"To End With It"
Up and down the length, width, & breadth of town,
it's a word to the wise (AND unwise),
not to treat lovers, friends, and celebs of renown
like patsies with whom we don't sympathize.
To trick folk to think the way that we do--
don't they all need our help?--
is manipulative, not honest or true,
like a freakin' forged letter to Yelp.
Squeezing people like putty ain't smart.
Your aims will be hindered by the hate in your heart.

"Silly Putty"
ReplyDeleteThe kids developed a myth
they hoped would give them some width.
They wanted games that ideas would tinder
and would not their ambitions hinder.
Their initial plans were just nutty,
like playing with Silly Putty.
Then they tried to invent a disguise,
but that proved to be unwise.
They wanted to win some money
but ended up with a spoonful of honey.
And so at the end of their busy day,
they did wind up with no games to play.
At least they got some honey.

But I found their ordeal quite touching, Misty. I wanna say, "Welcome to the game of life, kids."
Yep, we can't always get what we want.
A spoonful of honey puts us on the plus side.

And your advice to people, to be kind and not exploiting or manipulative is very important, Ol' Man Keith. I just wish a lot of people could read it and be persuaded by you!

"How'd I wind up hopeless and lost?" In turn they were tasked
With a program of recovery if they'd just get with it.
Alcohol? "By the gift of acceptance you'll never miss it "

Although I have had no direct experience with AA, I admire the way in which they counter arguments against using their help.
ReplyDeleteWilbur's phrase, "Don't let preconceptions hinder you..." is a good example. There are other expressions that are equally useful. I can't remember them word for word, but there are some that say you don't have to believe in AA (or a supreme being for that matter) to make use of it.
Other expressions talk about taking "One day at a time" and "one step at a time."
And Don't rush to the finish, just do the next thing.
All useful advice.

ReplyDeleteYes, it is sometimes tough to know when you're really acting for the other person's good-
-or to confirm your ability to steer them the right way.
But, as an AA'er might say, just do it.
