The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

"Training, Not Straining"
You had to be strong to lift that much weight,
and then to have swung it from side to side.
You must have eaten all the spinach on your plate.
You knew that was our theme if you wanta hit your stride.
Whether Tarzan or Popeye, you gotta keep in shape.
Eat plenty of "neat somethings" for your 'ceps to break the tape.

"Happy Couple"
ReplyDeleteTheir romance was like a dream
that made their hearts beam and gleam,
with marriage their cherished theme.
But if a couple hates to wait
and rushes to the gate
their fate tends to come with some weight.
To their wedding plans they clung
and to ideas they hung, and then flung.
And so, back and forth they swung.
But their purpose remained true and strong,
to each other they would belong
with wedding bells chiming their song.
It worked, and although they had tarried
and some problems and conflicts had carried,
in the end they were happily married.
At the altar they exchanged their rings,
with their souls high as wings on springs
and past problems just sweet nothings.
You are proving the truth, Misty,
ReplyDeletethat structural demands increase the power of the resulting verse.
Although it may seem counter-intuitive,
your insistence on triple rhyme endings
gives us a song that's "true and strong."
Brava to you for proving restraints
are one path to freedom.

PS. And "wings on springs" is a knockout image.
Here it is again.
ReplyDeleteJune.
The last week of May around here
brought mornings of haze, and not of good cheer.
Shoulda known when those graynesses loomed
we were soon doomed to all be June-gloomed.

"June-gloomed" cracked me up, Ol' Man Keith. So did having "neat somethings" rhyme with (sorta) "sweet nothings." Wish I had your gift for humor!
ReplyDeleteChet had learned to stay in the now, we just have today
ReplyDeleteThey said: " Avoid the highs and lows and try to stay
Centered and focused. For many had swung off the beam
Because they forgot to stay centered, neglected that theme
"When the weight of the world seems too strong for your shoulders,
Ask a Higher Power for help much as we've told ya"
The "weight " Chester felt was just how to approach
Lois. Would Sweet nothings in her ear bring reproach?

Chet is clearly thinking more about Lois than about AA. Whatever floats his boat and keeps him going!!
ReplyDeleteI'm rooting for Chet, Wilbur. But I am not sure what will do him more good--whether to win Lois' favor or to be kept at a distance.
ReplyDeleteCome to think of it, I am rooting for Lois too.
Whatever is best for her is probably good for our boy as well!
~ OMK
Misty, you may not be ' ha ha' funny but your verses always bring a smile to my face. Happy marriages and happy pets.
ReplyDeleteChet is hopeful he can woo Lois as well as some of your fellows.
Whereas OMK: spinach and 'ecs sounds like Popeye
Sandy, yes relationships can be dangerous. Chet cannot be 'projecting' with the 'Whatifs ', 'I'll nevers' kind of thinking. Patience is needed.
Thank you Wilbur. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Chet will be able to woo Lois. That would be lovely and warm my heart.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked "neat somethings."
ReplyDeleteIt came to me as a Spoonerism; it's only off by a couple of internal letters.
I figure these refer to low calorie treats full of proteins, luteins, and assorted vitamins.
