The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.
I thought the answer needed an s at the end, but nope, it's correct as it stands, and more nuance than is common in a Jumble.
ReplyDeleteAs of now (before midnight), the high-def version of the cartoon hasn't shown up. I'll check for it again in a couple hours, when the color version should come on line.
When speed is...
ReplyDelete"Paramount"
The bronco burst from his stall
like a firetruck down the avenue.
He had all his jets in thrall
flying out of view.
I checked the rodeo card for his breed
& what they named this equine guy.
His name was perfect for his speed.
Yippee Hi yah! For a burro so spry:
"Oomph" did assiduously try to fly!
"Hello," and--
"b' Bye!!"
~ OMK
The ship moored at the jetty,
ReplyDeleteand the horses were lead out.
A rodeo in paradise,
O'ahu cowboys gave a shout!
They paraded down the avenue,
the fairgrounds were prepared,
A Hawaiian style gala,
like a luau to be shared!
Standard stuff like bronco riding
was part of the form.
But also island specials,
like Wahini Steer Unadorn!
An event for cowgirl youths,
They ride to pull a ribbon
Inserted in a bull's sh*thole.
Really! I ain't kiddin'!
Cattle are big business there,
grass isn't just for skirts.
Hula moves get extra oomph
When bull-riding gets berserk!
A tenderfoot said, "It's easy,
I could ride a bull with flair!"
But the steer thought otherwise --
He landed about there. And there. And there...
Speaking of "nuance," Owen ~ does that mean this cartoon refers to a specific bout, between a defending Black champ and a returning white guy with a goatee?

"New Homes"
ReplyDeleteOur Betty loved her bronco
but she had to let him go
when she bought a new flat on an avenue
that gave her a wonderful view.
The place had a lot of oomph,
and getting it was a triumph.
To celebrate she went to the jetty
and drank wine and tossed confetti.
Her decision, she did not doubt,
was something she cared about.
And her bronco had a new home
in a barn with a high and wide dome.

ReplyDelete[Chet is curious whether he'd crossed paths with Lois earlier]
There used yo be a bar on 7th Avenue, down by the jetty
It was kinds wild, gals would get their oomph riding Bronco Betty
There were lots of joints down by the wharf or thereabout
And of course the usual crowd: pushers, druggies and various touts

Sorry about the typos, blogger wouldn't let me preview
DeleteDo our distaff members have any comments on the link in my poem (last line, second stanza)?
ReplyDeleteAlong with entertaining poems, I always LEARN a lot from Owen's entries. Today was no exception. Do local Hawaiian girls REALLY do that?
ReplyDeleteWHY?!a
And ya gotta wonder how it got started...
Misty offers another world entirely.
Even though she had to sacrifice her beloved bronco, Betty scored a great new place to live--for herself, but ALSO for the horse!
Not only a new home,
but one with a dome.
(This seems to have become an important amenity in recent days.)
~ OMK
Hadn't realized that was a link, Owen.
ReplyDeleteI just clicked it.
Looks like those youngsters really DO that.
So, my other questions still STAND.
Yuck.
Wilbur ~I understand Chet's concern, perhaps a degree of angst about whether he knew Lois before...
We all "wear different hats" and hang out with different cadres at various times of our lives.
It might be awkward to be getting along well with someone BEFORE you both recognize you met--as DIFFERENT PEOPLE--in an earlier slot of the Times of Your Life.

PS.. Yes, I know I bent the meaning of JETTY. Congratulations to you three for getting it right!
Once I got into my poem, I saw I had no room for the dictionary definition.
I had to either treat it as I did, or to introduce another rodeo ride, maybe a Black Bronco named "Jetty"?!
Ol' Man Keith, I wondered if you were going to name today's bronco--and, sure enough, you did: "Oomph"! Liked the way 'jetty' became 'jets,' and there about you also came up with a supreme title-- "Paramount," given your bronco's speed.
ReplyDeleteWilbur, oh dear, now you've got me worried. I sure hope that Chet isn't remembering seeing Lois in that bar, hanging out with druggies and touts. She's had a difficult past but hopefully not this bad. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm thinking, Wilbur, is that Lois has changed a lot. And that should give Chet even more hope for his future.
ReplyDeleteWell of Lois was indeed there so was Chet, ergo he was aware of the clientele.
ReplyDeleteIt was one of those joints that Dr Watson went to in search of an old acquaintance gone to pot.
And who's there in disguise but Sherlock. Those were the days of opium dens.
