The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

  1. Probably all of them, in fact.
I hope hers were not included in the deal.

  2. I think she's lucky, Sandy, in that the caption writer chose "his" for the possessive.

FLN: I don't expect folk to go back to check out the entirety of my last post, so I'll just reprint the concluding couplet.
I believe it offers a bit of wisdom for the wary:
"Since David Hume his thought perfected,
    Nothing can be unexpected."

And now, for today's Jumble ~
Please do not ignore the following correspondent. He prefers to avoid drastic measures. But if you should "ghost" him, he may have a mild or worse case of...

    "(A) Soft Dis(con)cert"
He slanted his usual proud penman's hand
to thwart those reading his ransom note.
From his island retreat he sent the demand
to the mainland via the midnight boat.
He hoped for a swift "Aye," or a counter-quote,
as he had no desire to slit Thad's throat.

  3. "Business"

When Carl was young he was often cowed
but his recent success has made him proud.
    He almost lost his shirt
when he partnered with his friend Bert.
It was difficult their business to start
with so many slants to thwart.
But their product ended up in demand
and by working hard, hand in hand,
they managed a generous sponsor to land.
After starting off as a mess,
    the partnership was a success.
Carl now lives on a lovely island
where he lays on the sand and gets tanned.

  4. Misty ~
Looks like Carl & Bert lucked out, in a career that ended happily every after.
I wonder, could that mysterious "in demand" "product" be...
    Ice Cream?!

  5. Ol' Man Keith, well, (given how I'm always thinking of rhymes) the product in demand might more likely have been cand/y in demand, than ice cream, I suspect.

Your own verse, OMK, once again had all the Jumble words and solution embedded--always terrific. And what an intriguing, mysterious tale about a ransom demand. But why was the demand just for an "Aye" and not for money, and who is Thad and why would the fellow slit his throat? I'd love to know more.

  6. Well, he was willing to negotiate, Misty, because his heart isn't really into the killing part of the job.
He really wants to send Thad (and his pals, if any) a message.
You don't suppose I would post just one stanza without knowing the outcome. I just hesitated to run all three stanzas 'cuz the reason for punishing Thad needs a WARNING posted.
Sensitive souls should read no further.

But since, you asked, here's the rest. Viewer Beware!

Thad had it coming, no two ways about it.
The note made that clear, and the ransom was low.
His gang or his folks should quickly remit it,
and this episode’ll be over, with no one to crow.
Unless they don’t think he’s worth any dough,
and they’d rather “write off” what I hold in escrow.

Thad’s sin? Not worth asking, he’s a heretic for sure.
I don’t want to say it; it’s an offense just to speak.
Young readers, look away! Your eyes are too pure.
Thad’s crime only comes from someone whose cheek
bespeaketh a head over-bold. He doth reek
    of the odor of sanctity,
    of phony humanity,
while forcing young Mommies to abuse fenugreek.

  7. [Chet and Lois are in the back seat returning from speaker mtg]
    (Chet speaks)
I'm proud to know you, Lois, you're a Power of example to all
You found the key to thwarting the evil John Barleycorn
Those betting against your recovery lost their shirt
You proved them all wrong, made them eat dirt
Now I've learned no man's an island and no matter how sad or forlorn
There's hope in these halls no matter how far we fall.

Yes, your story was slanted, we all have a one track mind
When it comes to reaching out to drunks like me we're blind

  8. Nice compliments, Wilbur, from Chet to Lois.
If this is flirtation, he is masking it well, as this seems to be a well-reasoned professional compliment from one recovering addict to another. A little vengeful, perhaps, but that's only human.

  9. So the story's not over yet. Chet does sound very complimentary. I'm not quite sure why he said her story was slanted or what he means by it.
