The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

  1. I'd like to tell you more about my Uncle Ned.
He's as batty in his belfry as he is in his head!
You see, he bought an unused church, with a steeple,
Because he didn't want anyone to think him "sheeple"!

    In some ways, he's as strait-laced as a preacher;
But in other's he's forward as feature's creature!
Don't accept a dinner invite, he makes his own stew,
With a splash of battery fluid, to make a savory brew!

When he was young, I'm told, he was straight-and-narrow.
But along the way, someone "flipped his wheel-barrow".
    Once he was eccentric, in a past that's somewhat hazy;
But he's aged beyond that. Now he's simply crazy!

  2. Late at night, when I'm tired and sleepy, I'd be lost without jumbleanswer.com. But when I look at this solution, it actually makes sense both ways, IMO the primary requisite for a pun.

In retrospect, the way the writers avoided using the normal term for their topic was pretty obvious. But I missed it, and am way overdue for bed and sleep. Nite.

[Chet goes on explaining the Program to Eddie]

Don't get swept away thinking 'What an order it's not easy to grasp'
It's actually pretty straight forward just stay with it, don't lapse.
You'll go batty unless you narrow things down to a few basic
Principles. To sum it up neatly just savor the moment and this trick:

Start with Humility. Don't gloat about past success nor shrink
From the challenge. Stay fluid, remember our motto: Think,Think
Think*. Honesty is another H-word as you'll see.
And finally, perhaps the most important : Live in Harmony

    * One of five sayings posted upfront; usually upside down to illustrate normal alcoholic thinking
    Live and let Live
    Easy does it
But for the grace of God
    Think, Think, Think
    First things first

  6. ”Drive Straight Forward”

The lane for “Sammy’s Savory Sandwich”
    was so narrow,
my car nearly scraped its side.
I almost banged the menu stand, which
    held an arrow
    pointing a way I hadn’t tried.

Hmm. Was this in fact the right path?
Was my car now headed right?
Sounds of anger ahead—sounds of wrath!
The sandwich joint seemed different tonight.

I won’t go back to Sammy’s, because of what happened next.
For years I was a regular, and I thought I knew all the staff,
but they seem to have shifted dimensions & now upset
all norms. (I refuse to buy fast food from a flaming sociopath.)

At Sammy’s service window, the lady threw my food,
blooding my nose; she next made a filthy gesture, truly crude,
and dared to shake coke up—in a manner deranged!

“Hey, witch,” I yelled, “Get your ‘batty fluid’ changed!”*

  7. Omk, I rechecked fln, thank you. I noted the many principles which began with H. In fact I composed a poem to that effect entitled 'H is for...'

Lo and behold a bestseller came out 'H is for... Hawk'

I have it somewhere , perhaps Chet will recite it to Eddie if the J's cooperate

  8. And back to Sammy and the witch who tries ones endurance*

Perhaps a change of management occurred which embittered the staff who took it out on the customers

Management is taught to focus on pennies but often overlook the pounds.

My waitress friend had been comp'ing an old gentleman, not charging for his coffee which enabling him to eat there more often.

A rival waitress, envious of my friend ratted her out. The firing led to my friend expanding her cleaning business and is prospering. As well, also, of putting together a string of C&S**

  9. "Successful Interview"

Kate knew it would not be hard
    to be fluid and straight-forward
    and neither chatty nor batty
in her interview with the bard.

His narrow poetry about knavery and slavery
    was considered illuminating and savory,
and so she gave him her greatest praise,
and her article earned her a raise.

  10. I was disappointed in my climactic stanza. It lets the reader down.
Small edits can smooth the rhythm.
Thank you for your patience. Go back, and ride in with me again.

At Sammy’s service window, a new lady threw my food,
bloodying my nose. Then she made a filthy gesture, truly crude
it was. She dared to shake my coke—in a manner most deranged!
Years of faithful dining were all at once estranged:
“Hey, witch,” I upbraided* her, “Get your ‘batty fluid’ changed!”**

  11. Misty ~ Your title says it all. Your economical verse met all requirements neatly. Two smooth stanzas hit all the marks. Brava!
While I am happy for Kate & her bard, I hoped for an obstacle, a small reversal or an eruption. I think in our shorter works we open ourselves to haiku-style expectations: for a gentle twist of some sort.

Owen ~ Crazy Uncle Ned gets badder and madder. He’s a hoot, just keep him comin’!

Wilbur ~ Your observations re. waitressing, pennies v. pounds, etc. all manage to align head and nail.
As to your “allusion,” I take it you mean the Witch of Endor. I promise my Sammy lady had no demonic powers.

  12. Wow! Three long and neat poems before I even checked in this morning! Exciting--many thanks, all three of you!

Owen, it hadn't occurred to me that abandoned church buildings could be sold--especially to a crazy loon like Uncle Ned. Hope he didn't poison anyone with his battery-fluid stew! (I think he might be ready for an institution).

Wilbur, great to see Chet continuing to give Eddie good advice, especially with all the Jumble words so nicely worked in.

Ol' Man Keith, poetry eruptions don't get any more dramatic than the one in your verse this morning! My goodness, I can't believe that crazy lady's violent behavior at Sammy's drive-in shop! Don't you think it helped to have my calm, undramatic, sedate and dull verse following your tragedy?

  13. Wilbur, I like the AA sayings -- mostly. And I do like the H's a lot, though one of them is rather difficult for me.

Ah well, as I've said before here, I think, it's a good thing I've never had need of AA; probably wouldn't function well there.

    Thanks for the info.

  14. Yes, of course, Misty, there's always room for the "calm" & "undramatic."
    But never for the "dull."

Your two stanzas are not dull.
Far from it. You set a shining, placid scene.
In metaphor, I see the smooth surface of a clear, quiet pond.
    Begging for a ripple.

  15. Ah, what a sweet, rhyme-less, and kind response from you, OMK.
Many thanks again. But instead of adding a ripple to my verse, I'll just plan to tipple a small glass of wine tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Misty, that's not Ripple you're drinking? You seem like a Merlot kind of gal.

I had to do a lookup of the
Witch of Endor I thought it might be a PATTERSON book

Sandy. One of the H's eh? We all have to work at all three. Not Honesty and I doubt it's Harmony. I haven't see any sign of a lack of Humility in you.

Actually, in the AA world, Humility has to do with turning one's will over to HP. Entire volumes have tried to solve that enigma

  17. You're right, Wilbur, Merlot is an absolute favorite of mine.
