    1. Also, knowing my modus operandi you might want to work out the Jumble letter-wise

  3. Today’s Jumble, a happy haiku!:
    Just as Noah’s family hoped for a sign from a land-based bird…

    Avian’s Tonality

    Adults, dread, adrift
    from a slowly sinking ship,
    hear a bluebird’s chirp!

  4. On the occasions when I combine, say, Thursday with the still to be published J-words, has anyone tried to identify the Friday J's and riddle-solution?

I usually do it late so perhaps folk just wait. I thought it might be interesting.

Re. Wordle hint..Golly Keith , how low can you go? Also, guessing my #1 can you suss #2?. You're remarkably good at that

  5. "Shift"

Abe belonged to an adult cult
with rules that allowed no-one to insult.
You were also forbidden to burp,
    or even to cheerfully chirp.

Slowly Abe began to feel miffed
and left the cult, which set him adrift,
But by now he's joined a whole new club
    whose hospitality is a gift.

  6. Woohoo! Woohoo! Your Wordle hint did it again, Ol' Man Keith, and I got it on one try:

    You've just made my day!

  7. Glad I am again, Ms. Misty, to have led your WooHoo right!

Your Abe gave me chuckles in return. Many thanks!
His cult’s eccentricities are just silly enough to disguise underlying depravity.
I only wish his new “club” revealed even nuttier signs—to show Abe’s proclivity for innocent-seeming secret signs. (But I respect your desire to rescue the characters you place in peril.)

WC, Golly yourself! I can’t begin to imagine your starter word today. I can take a stab that your 2nd was either GUILD or GUILT. GUILE would be a runner-up.
    Am I close?

  8. Oops, Misty, I’m one to talk!
When I rescued my own drowning peeps today—with a cry from the sky, no less.

  9. Wilbur ~ I am not sure I understand your question about your combined Thursday & Friday J-words that you posted & re-posted.
Yes, I noticed that you included them all in Chet & Lois’ visit to the UN-seedy coffee-cum-music dispensary. Did your question aim any deeper? I thought the stanzas delightful, and clever in your embedding of the solutions.

  10. OMK, mentioned earlier that I start with a J, today ADULT. Still you were close as GUISE was #2.

    And...

To explain further, I thought it would be interesting to pick out J's and riddle-solution before seeing the jumbled words

    WC

  11. You are kind, WC, but GUISE wasn't one of my guesses.
I should have had it, because three of the necessary letters were givens, no work involved.

No, wait! Strike that! Your 2nd word could not have been GUISE. Go back and check your entries.
It is no secret now that the answer is GULLY, but with GUISE you are claiming an "S" where the green on your diagram requires an "L."
Please check again, and let us know which was your penultimate word.

As for your Thursday/Friday words, I did not look for them before the Friday Jumble was posted. Sorry.

  12. Correctamundo OMK, it was indeed GUILE

I suppose peoples schedules are to login at about 9am current time(PDT for you and Misty)

Perhaps then you might check the FLN's

It just seems like an interesting J challenge.

  13. Thanks for clarifying abt GUILE, Wilbur.
I often check after 9am PDT to see who has logged on. But I mainly do my Jumble posting in the wee hours, after midnight or around 1am PDT, when I can see the Jumble on the LA Times digital site.
When I read yours and Misty’s poems, I honestly don’t read them for the J-words—not at first anyway. I’ll go back later on, sometimes, if I have time, to see if there’s any particularly interesting usage.

Do I understand correctly, that you would like feedback on your use of J-words when you post them early?

  15. Chet had been adrift in an alcoholic haze since his teen years
Slowly he was evolving into a responsible adult with new frontiers
The hospitality and kindness of Charles and Nora required acceptance
Much like the chirping of birds heralded the new day's advance

    WC

  16. OMK, it is as I suspected: you'd read Friday already then checked the late Thursday posts

Hence you already knew the J's.

But if not it might have been an interesting exercise to find them. No difficulty finding them in my latest C&L

Chet is adjusting. He's not the "turtle on the fence post"* any longer

    * Heard that one at the noon meeting today. Talk about isolation

Misty, try it with these hints before Keith's

  18. I see that we are not set up for Sept. 4. I’m recovering today after an extremely busy, tiring, but satisfying week.
I got an Impressive today (started with the vowel-rich French word).
