  1. Today’s Jumble haiku:
(Pastor Julius Snort, D.D., was a distinguished leader of his flock. He made sure his congregation hewed to the straight and narrow and minded their ps & qs. When it was time for his contract to be renewed, he balked at the raise he was offered and demanded that his congregants search their hearts and pray for divine guidance.)

“(The) Green (may Hire Someone) Green”

    Pastor Snort haggled,
    so the elders engaged a
    seminarian.

  3. Saint Patrick went to Ireland to preach,
Using the trefoil shamrock to teach.
Each green stem like the Godhead is one,
Three green leaves are Father, Spirit, Son!

The elder Druids were not pleased
At this Christian praying on his knees.
He would snort at their oaks he'd ignore,
Gathering power from the forest floor.

He would engage them in dialogues,
Trying to wean them from their pagan gods.
Try to haggle with the Wiccan priests,
Convert them to his Catholic beliefs.

Oh yes, the snakes he drove from the land --
He did it in a Mini-Cooper sedan!

  5. Top of the Morning

Yes north of the border I am,
    Engaged in geneology, yes ma’am!
    My elders to find,
    With none left behind.
    No haggling over the facts,
There is green in my past.
    No need to be aghast,
    At today’s meal, yes,
    Corned beef. Wear green dress.

  6. "Conflict"

The elder brother did nothing but snort
when the younger asked to join him
    on the tennis court.

They were always in a bit of a rage
    and did never well engage,
haggling since they were in their teens.

So the older brother said, "No,
I'm heading out to the greens."
And the younger said, "Oh, just go!
You're not worth a can of beans."

  7. A happy St. Patrick’s Day all around!
I don’t know what we’re supposed to do to celebrate, except to wear (or eat or drink) something green—especially if it isn’t naturally green.
Or just get drunk. That is the stereotypical salute to Irishness, isn’t it? A reminder, perhaps, that the day was established to placate the then-lowerclass American Irish who were a boisterous threat to peace in their communities.

Owen does a fine job of reviewing our received wisdom of this 5th century Romanized Brit, including the fanciful (here taken to the extreme) idea that he “drove” the snakes from the Auld Sod (all in the back seat, one presumes).

  8. Well done, CanadianEh!
3 couplets and a triplet in honor of “the green in (your) past,”
    well rhymed too;
you do the old folk proud, indeed you do!

Misty ~ While there’s no explicit reference to the Irish, the siblings in your verse seem to show the temper we associate with the sons of Erin.
That, plus the expression, “can of beans,” seems to fit a rivalry to be settled on “the greens”!
    Thank you for “Conflict.”

  9. I hope everyone had a happy St Patrick’s Day. Thanks Owen for your verse giving some of Patrick’s history. I’m not sure he would like what has become of his celebration.

Misty- your poem was an epic story of sibling rivalry. I laughed at your “hill of beans”. Perhaps not your usual happy ending, but at least the brothers parted without fisticuffs.

OMK- I smiled at Pastor Snort. Sometimes haggling can lead to dismissal.
Thanks for your kind words. My great-great grandmother was Irish. I was wearing the green today!

  10. Maybe a little more length can provide background to the Rev. Snort’s situation.
This is a warning he should have rec’d, before it was too late:

You may snort at the donations coffered,
and haggle ‘bout what’s been offered,
but the elders still have got the hiring power.
As time rolls on, and you reach the final hour,
they may decide your sermons are too dry,
and think to engage a new man, on the sly.

  11. Happy St. Patrick's Day to all of you! And isn't it neat that today's Jumble--without making any reference to St. P, still gave us all that "green" to color our verses and comments. A real pleasure all around.
