  1. FLN, Misty ~ CEh & I are glad our late postings were able to help you get a one-line Wordle! Brava!!

FYI, my poem below provides an example of the backstory I use.
If you were to read the haiku in isolation, it would hold very limited sense. The prose intro in parentheses presents a context for understanding the 17-syllable verse.

    Today’s Jumble haiku:
(All the beehives on the property were in danger of bursting in the wake of a seismic event. There was little they could do to secure a safety zone outdoors. The insects could invade as far as the ground floor of the house. How could they protect the folk on as many of the upper stories as possible?…)

    Homebound Ward

    The indoor gambit
would be to wedge a huge couch
    in the stairwell gap.

  2. Nom, nom, nom, nosh,
    This does taste good, b'gosh!
    It's not brunch,
    Tea time nor lunch,
    It's munchies for the not-so-posh!

OMK, I know your spoon is a hint to the riddle-solution but I'm still at sea

  5. (Don’t forget that your canine companion needs to prowl about the neighbourhood daily . . . and the exercise won’t hurt you either!)

    Roam Bored Hound

    It’s too nice a day
    To be indoor in May,
    Wedged on the couch,
    Creating a pouch
    That will soon protrude
    From gorging on snack food,
    Bingeing The Queen’s Gambit
    And ignoring your Fitbit.

Please take the dog for a walk
    At least around the block.

  6. FLN- WooHoo Misty. Glad we could help you get that Wordle in one guess.
Good work today WC- you beat Owen and me.

OMK- I never would have guessed that backstory if I had read your haiku first. What an imaginative narrative. I can just see those bees trying to get around the couch. But maybe the6 will decide to nest in it.

Owen- I loved your W poem with its “osh” rhyming.

  7. "Seniority"

As a star, Brenda was renowned,
but now she was homeward bound.
    In her seniority her gambit
    became her career to quit.

    She wanted a life indoor
that the press would at last ignore.
She would spend time relaxed on her couch
feeling cheerful, and not being a grouch.

This new life would give her a wedge
    to new adventures to pledge.
In this way she fulfilled her requirement
    for enjoying a happy retirement.

  8. Misty- your Brenda was fortunate to retire from her job that kept her in the limelight. Hopefully the press will continue to ignore her .I loved the rhyming* couplets.

  9. Ol' Man Keith,

I hope your cool verse keeps the bees at bay,
though your poetry may make them want to stay,
but they'll never keep your fans away.

    Owen,

Your neat verse packed such a punch
it made me want a bunch
    of chocolate cookies to crunch.

    Wilbur,

If you get your puppy some kibble
he'll have something delicious to nibble
and joyful drool he will dribble.

    CanadianEh!,

We too about pups should talk,
    I know they often balk
being scared that maybe a hawk
    will follow them to gawk.
Just tell them no-one will stalk.

  10. CanadianEh! ~ Glad you found my backstory helpful. I want to give a highly contrasting example to Misty, one in which the poem would not make sense in isolation.
My usual process is to string the J-words into a grammatical form, then see what's missing in order to make sense.

Your poem offers good advice to a dog's human parents. Our brand new (3 mo. old) Yorkie would quickly have taught us this lesson if we were not fortunate enough to have a large garden in which she cavorts daily!

  11. May Brenda find her "golden years" filled with privacy & peace, Misty. If she is especially famed for her years on display, she may be forced to dodge paparazzi through her retirement.
May she fare better--far better!--than Princess Di, still the prime example of disrespect & invaded privacy.

Thanks for calling my verse "cool." I hope it offers a useful example of a backstory . Readers are always free to interpret a poem for themselves, but sometimes a terse verse can use some support.

  12. It is truly a fact—
    the truth—no goin’ back.
    Y’know me, Mac,
    (this ain’t no hack).
you can put me on the rack,
    and I won’t crack!
    But my lips would smack.
    They won’t go slack,
    while I gotta knack
    for an afternoon …..
    ~ OMK
