Tough Thing (I) Know It

OMK- our thoughts were directed in the same direction today by that Goalie/Tooth combo. Having a son who is a goalie, I am happy that modern masks protected his teeth which had a large orthodontic investment.
My offering today is a little different construction. After I looked at my initial creation (with long lines), I realized that it had an internal rhyme (sort of), and I decided to split up the lines to emphasize it. Does it work? Sort of?
I was a Wordle fail today. Who knew there were so many possible first letters. And I didn’t even try the British candy or the girl’s name. But I did go with the Christmas plant.
"Loving Love"
Betty loved going steady
with a boyfriend who was never petty,
and never for a moment uncouth
even when he once broke a tooth.
In sports he wasn't much of a goalie,
and not religious or very holy.
Some guys treated him like a minnow
which should have made him feel low.
But nothing mattered in his life,
and he ignored all this silly strife,
because he asked Betty to marry,
and he now has a loving wife.
Dear Misty ~ Your poem works very nicely, especially how you tie the J-words together thematically. Brava! You make particularly good sense in contrasting "minnow" with the machismo expected of a goalie.
(As you can see, I couldn't use "minnow" at all.)
CanadianEh! ~ Yes, your internal (near-)rhyme works very well, assuming you're referring to "folly"/"goalie."
I am glad for your son's (and your) sake that the new masks are not so dismissive of dental health as our two poems. But I expect poets and sports writers will carry on the old devaluation of hockey players' natural bites!

I lucked out in jumping from my starter of SLATE to my 2nd stab. I toyed with ideas and in the end made a point to avoid all letters except "E" and my one success (the "L").
So naturally, for no. 2, I chose FELON!
Owen ~ Your W hints today were both on target and a real delight. I'd forgotten with how many of these things our history is replete!
And I like your flag display. With Ukraine's heroism in the news every day, we are becoming more and more aware of this country's culture and history.
I for one had a dim understanding of the country's position in Europe before this war. I thought of it as a "small" Soviet-era appendage to Russia, not realizing how large it is, relative to other European nations. It is larger than France, and nearly 70% larger than Germany.
The population isn't as great, but larger than California's.
