This week my “day off” is already committed.
I gotta revive my skill as a Rhetor—
to find new words that may befit it,
composing yet another rec letter!
I thought my retirement would bring an end
to the tasks & chores of being a professor.
But nothing tells an ex-student to wend
her way elsewhere, to seek my successor…
…because he wouldn’t know her from Adam,
this professor, my successor.
Of this applicant, he’s got not a datum,
leaving me the only prof to assess her.
So I will do it. A professor’s tenure is
really for life. Giving up Sunday hours
is a small price—not too much to surrender. This
alumna’ll be grateful (& might even send flowers!).

"Tough Jumble"
I have trouble rhyming today's Sunday Jumble
which makes me feel both feeble and humble.
Rhyming "sudden" and "hungry" made me ponder
what words like that might be out yonder.
So I abruptly visited a valley,
where I spent hours trying words to tally.
Now I hope to be thanked by every-buddy
as I wait for responses there in my study.
I took a long break after my second guess; came back and got it immediately.

Everybody Needs Somebody
It was too abrupt,
That sudden change;
The hungry child could not adapt.
His feeble cries sounded weakly,
Only in the yonder valley,
Not reaching the mountain range.
But Sister Teresa heard!
OMK- I am sure that alumna is suitably grateful, not only for your initial teaching, but also for your continued support in supplying a recommendation. Yes, a small price on a Sunday.
I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
Misty- well, I am your buddy today to give you a response to your delightful poem. What a dilemma to rhyme today’s J words. I cheated with “adapt” and “abrupt”. (OMK might get it if he reads this later). And my rhyme scheme is unorthodox, with no rhyme for “heard”. Let’s call it free verse, and be happy I got all the words included into a reasonable story. I’m not aware that Sister Teresa rescued children in the valleys or mountains, but I was grasping for a name to use that would be a recognizable Rescuer.
Thanks for the fun (please don’t feel feeble).
Ol Man Keith, how nice that you still write letters of recommendation for former students. I sadly had to step down from my role as professor when my sweet Rowland had a stroke, and would require extensive care to maintain a more or less normal life. So I had to stop teaching a decade or more before I would have wanted to do that. As a result my contact with students went down much sooner, and I missed it terribly. But it was wonderful having seven more years with Rowland than I might have had.
What a sweet verse, CanadianEh!--how kind of Sister Teresa to help that hungry little one.
I wonder if you could give me a silly suggestion for how you approach doing a Wordle everyday. Back when I used to get a hint about what the word might be, it was fun to give it a try. But I don't think I can do it without any clue at all. Do your Wordle comments provide a hint, or could you possibly give me a hint every now and then. I would just enjoy trying it again.
Have a good week coming up, everybody. (Including you, Sandyanon, if you're still checking in here these days).
The thing is, I have no comments to make on Wordle or Jumbles, and wouldn't be replying to others' posts. Nothing really to say. Saw a need to mention CEh's missing posts, but doubt that would happen again.
