Dec. 2, 2018 Sunday

|| whoop, tarry, alight, invert, write right. || thatch, surely, tariff, barren, gambit, cobalt, stomaching the bill.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

  1. After his fun was done, Hector went into the house,
Milly a pace behind, quivering inside like a mouse.
Hector plopped down on a couch, covered by a sheet.
Milly noticed two eye-holes, but didn't let out a peep!

Should they tarry in the main room, all wrapped in white,
Or explore other rooms, their bright lamp to keep alight?
The pair became inverted, Hector timid, holding back,
While Milly, now committed, would examine every crack!

She went to search alone, for a story in her sight.
She had been cleared to enter, she had a right to write.
The sun was fully down when she entered to the den.
Hector, settled in, heard a Whoop! He went to find, and then...

    (I promise I'll continue.)

  2. The poorest of the poor are hurt the most by sanctions.
They're passed on to the needy, no worries in the mansions.
But in the thatch-roofed huts, tariffs trickle down,
What was dear today, will be dearer still next dawn.

Surely the rich could see the curse of barren fields.
But they say it's just a gambit to conceal normal yields.
The bloated stomachs of the starving ask a bill for relief.
Rich senators give a pittance. Self-reliance their belief!

We're lucky in this nation, our safety net is here.
But we face other dangers, now pollution we must fear.
Our skies, once so blue, now have a darker, cobalt cast.
Our rivers, once so clear, carry poisons flowing past!

  3. The j4 poem leaves me wondering what could come next. But I'm not sure at all about Hector. What fun was done??

The j6 poem sounds quite real, though the safety net seems to be in danger of developing more holes than a net can handle. So are we still lucky? It takes up some of the other real issues, too.

In any case, both poems are, as always, interesting and ingenious.

    1. j4 was a sequel to the Nov. 30 puzzle, where Hector reprises the piano scene from "Big".
j6 had talked about "bloated stomachs", an image I only connect with Africa or Asia, so the viewpoint had to shift.

    2. J4: Oh, of course, Hector in FAO Schwartz.
J6: Well, I guess we're luckiER than some. this poem is seriously realistic, though, in the issues it treats, and strikes close to home.

  4. Is the second word of the first solution ever properly an adverb? I'm sure most of us would say "correctly," yes?
But are we just being pedantic?

    2. How about these, just for fun:

She was right behind you, but she kept right on walking, and now she'll be right back.

    3. Make a sharp right, then go right on. You got it, right?

  5. Totally delightful Sunday Jumble! I had trouble with the sixth word, and so hoped that Owen's poem would help me out. It did--many thanks, Owen! Once I had that word, I was able to get the solution easily--and a very funny solution, I thought. So off to a good start on a sunny Sunday.
