There are several other Jumble blogs, but the ones I checked all started off by listing the answers. In this blog, answers can be either hinted at or masked by burying them in comments. No overt spoilers!
All hints are in the comments!

|| || guava, juice, budget, stench, subject at hand.
The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are the lifeblood of a blog!
Read the comments, and reply to them if you are so moved!
Twenty-eighteen is going away, Last time you can use it twill be today. A year of chaotic government, A miasma with a swampy stench.
How did we survive this awful year? Disasters, madness, jittery fear? Aloe vera, agave, guava smoothies, Lotion, tequila, juices got us thru these.
Still the new year won't dawn so bright Shutdown-shakedown remains a fright. At hand is a subject powered by gall, How to budget around that damn wall!
Surprisingly difficult because three of the seeds were in the same realm, and the other two were so common they could be dropped into most anything, so suggested nothing.
The solution looked daunting at first. I got off on the wrong foot in following the rule to solve the small words first. The available letters excluded many common prepositions, and my error was to go with the article, "an," requiring a vowel-starting noun to follow. I wasted maybe five *#%! minutes with that stupid "an." When I changed its 2nd letter and reached Preposition-land after all, it instantly pulled the correct noun from the pool and--Hallelujah!--the whole thing popped into view! Happy New Years Eve, everybody! ~ OMK
No Jumble in the LA Times today, so I had to come here to get the cartoon and the clues. #2 was the only one that came quickly, so many thanks for your poem, Owen--I would have had a lot of trouble with the others without it. But once I had all the words, the solution was easily at hand, thank goodness. Have a great New Year's Eve, everybody, and thank you for all the Jumble delight!
Well, contrarywise, I had a lot of trouble with the solution, though none with the clues. It just wouldn't come to me, except for that little word in the middle. So I went to your poem for help, Owen, and found it.
I love the poem, by the way. Couldn't agree more with the sentiments expressed.

Happy New Year! May it be better than the last one.
ReplyDeleteWell, the last word seemed obvious and having those B's and J's got me the first .
ReplyDeleteI had a lot of trouble with #4. But mixing and matching letters got it done .
Our Pastor shares the same sentiments as OKL and Sandy but unfortunately ( and unnecessarily) named that Name .
Followed by a talk with the Bishop who received a bunch of letters from the diehards. Oh, the topic of the sermon? Dissimulation

PS. Yes Owen, for once the J's fit together
And... Here's a guave smoothie to you for a healthy and HAPPY NEW YEAR
