The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.
Well, shoot me at sunrise, but that solution makes no sense to me.
ReplyDeleteHonest, I get the idea, but ...
YMMV.
I know, I know.
ReplyDeleteBut it sorta works as a Spoonerism--sorta--so I won't complain.
"Bo(g)ie*-Folding"
The engine driver pulled the brake in time
to screech to a halt before the above-gauge track.
He hadn't been warned the new route included a climb
and--worse--that the next rail's width would be far too slack.
Was it a plot? Were bandits lying in wait?
He ought to back down, but the angle wasn't straight.
He'd have to go "by hoof" onto the highway,
and have them dispatch a shunter car straightaway.

"Career"
ReplyDeleteDan initially worked as a diver
until he got a job as a driver.
Then, in a diner, he cooked stew
and made an occasional fondue,
before he took on work at a zoo.
His options Dan began to gauge
and chose a job that put him on stage.
The rehearsals were initially tough
but he was finally considered above
the other actors, and that was enough
to give him the career he would always love.
So in spite of his initial foreboding
Dan is now happy and gloating
with fans who on him are doting
and on his awards are voting.
Excuse me, but...
ReplyDeletemy "Fo(l)ding" needed to show the "L" in parens too.
Just the two of us again, eh, Misty?
From diver, driver, & chef to actor
Daniel needs no benefactor.
Doing all those things he can,
he proves himself a self-made man.
That's the message what I am heeding
in the poem that I am reading.
~ OMK
Yes, sad, Ol' Man Keith, not to see messages from Owen, Wilbur, and Sandy.
ReplyDeletePlease check in with us, guys--we miss you.
My heart goes out to your engine driver
I'm praying he's still an alive-er.
I've never heard of a "shunter"--
is it some sort of hunter or punter?
Sorry to see the poor fellow chafe,
and just hope he was able to stay safe.
Oops, you did check in with us, Sandy--bless you!
ReplyDeleteYep, Sandy is definitely a regular.
ReplyDeleteI was referring only to the steady poets. But we count on Sandy--who's often wittier in her dry prose than we can be in several juicy stanzas.
A "shunter" is the same as a "switcher" or "pilot" engine. it is a smaller locomotive used to push larger trains around, either in the yard or roundhouse, when they need to be sorted onto the correct tracks for their next trip--or to rescue trains if the initial locomotive fails or is stuck in a bad position.
It's amazing what we can Google nowadays.
A "Bogie" is a powered undercarriage of six or eight wheels that can slide beneath a train car or engine--and by synecdoche can represent an entire engine or train.
My only real liberty today was to substitute "above-gauge" for "broad gauge" in identifying the track width. Assume our driver to be rolling on standard gauge. That would be tracks that are 4 feet 8 inches apart.
Oh! I assume you found my "fondue."
Did you?
~ OMK
Was his "fondue" "he had to go by hoof"? Think I missed it, I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteOMK, "hoof onto"?
ReplyDeleteRe. FONDUE, Here's an oldie
ReplyDeletebison, color, simmer, fondue, "moore" bond films.
As Bilbo escaped he espied a glimmer
Of light . Smaug's anger had begun to simmer.
Bilbo saw the passageway. For which he must get through
Else when Smaug spots the theft, he'll be Hobbit fondue.
A film of light flickered by the sun showed the exit
More color appeared, what an effect it
Had. He'd escaped, he was the Burglar
He'd bond with the dwarves, he'd be a star
********
agile, yield, sonata, shrimp, tirelessly.
Smaug was aware that the shrimp had slipped away
His little sonata had yielded nothing, he'd make him pay.
What's more the agile runt had filched a fob
He hadn't come to praise , he'd come to rob.
But he'd not escape, nor forgiveness be
Revenge would be relentless and tirelessly
