blend, booth, lawful, rudder, "low" and behold.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Some oceanic traditions descend from Ancient Greek,
while a few are so old they nearly creak.
But here are two—
that fit a haiku!
“Lo! Behold These
Rules of the Sea!”
Toot “Lawful Rudder”
to pass in fog. Blend Booth’s gin
with tonic for grog.

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!
ReplyDeleteKeith, or anyone else willing to take over as adminisrator of this blog:
My eyesight is going, and my mind is getting increasingly muzzy more often. I can keep setting up the blog for a while, but I'd like to have a successor identified and trained before I retire. July 9 will be the 4th anniversary of this blog, so July 9 will be my target date for retiring.
Make note that I got the picture today from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette at https://www.arkansasonline.com/puzzles/jumbledaily1/ The site also hosts an interacive version which is useless here. I get the smoother version to work the puzzle at the Chicago Tribune. That's what I've been cutting up to create the version unique to this site.
"Confession"
ReplyDeletePete went to a priest in a booth
because he wanted to tell the truth.
Some things he had done were not lawful
and he was now feeling awful.
He wanted to confess and amend
and blend apologies to send.
The priest saw how Pete did shudder
and offered some spiritual rudder.
"Your feeling guilty and low
will new faith on you bestow.
And because of what you have told
you will salvation behold."
Pete did what he was told
and his spirit is now healthy and bold.
Mea culpa! The photo and eddress were wrong! The correct image is up there /\ now, and the address is

An unusual and semi-dark tale from our Misty today. Pete, a sinner seeking the confessional, is guilty of one or more dark deeds, shameful acts that trouble his soul.
ReplyDeleteI like the metaphor of a "spiritual rudder," as offered by his priest.
The priest's reminder that Pete's uncomfortable feelings are at least part of the price for healing seems an often-overlooked point of wisdom.
Thank you for this, Misty.
Owen, we have been dreading this moment. You have given us a beautiful thing, and we should be able to assume the burden and ease your mind as you retire. But I cannot take it on. I must admit I am simply not up to the task. I hope someone else can step up.

Woohoo! I just saw a Monarch butterfly flit around my front yard--the first one this year!
ReplyDeleteI feared they might be gone, so this is a wonderful sign! Woohoo!
The most regular contributor to this site is Misty. I know she will put herself down, Owen, because despite her considerable verbal skills, she is inclined to be self-critical. But what she doesn't know, she can learn, and I believe she would be a fine keeper of the flame. As it is, nobody is more devoted to the site.
ReplyDeleteAlternativey, you might give some thought to asking Sandy. This may seem odd, as we know she has quit her regular postings, but she might come back if she knows she could have a hand in making the site more hospitable to non-poets.
I believe she has some tech skills that have been unexplored. Her many years as a university administrator suggest abilities that have, so far, been untapped on this site.

When I was in the hospital a couple years ago, I asked for a temp replacement, Sandy, Misty, and Wilbur all demurred. Things may have changed for one of them, but I don't count on it. So I ask newcomers and lurkers, for someone to please take the helm!
ReplyDeleteEven knowing BEHOLD was a word I couldn't get the riddle-solution. Ugh(Wilbur for Sandy)
ReplyDeleteMisty you do have imagination on employment of the J words. I've got to look back and see if you hinted at full riddle-solution

Yep, there they are, right on top of bestow. Great work

Still looking for a Wordle clue, Wilbur?
ReplyDeleteCheck the rhyme for my “Greek.”
Looks like we’re facing what we may call an “existential” threat, dear colleagues.
All the work that Owen’s been devoting to this site is about to come to nothing—if we can’t find a new administrator.
No volunteers?
