Time again, dear reader,
for Keith to take his breather.
See you again on Monday,
after taking a Donne day,
John Donne, that is—perhaps a sermon
of his, if not a verse o’ learnin’
about love—
the art whereof
Ol’ John was a master.
Although a pastor,
he knew intimately
all unconditionally
what might be said.
Among living or dead,
he was the nonpareil & sine qua non
of all that was either stern or fun.
He it is who lets us choose a way to wile
away my day, either in productive toil
or, at the other pole, sum’mat to raise a smile—
nothing, either way, which in memory might spoil.
Whatever we choose to do,
let’s be sure it’s nought to rue!

"Courtship"
Solving a Sunday puzzle
was always a bit of a tussle.
Frank was almost forty
but he was still pretty sporty.
A girl did finally entice
him to date, and she was nice.
He courted her under a canopy
and asked her to be his wife.
She said yes and soon did verify
that his proposal was not a lie.
They married in a studio without any fuss
for this all served their common purpose.
Ol'Man Keith,
It looks like today it's just us two,
at least that keeps me from feeling blue.
Our Canadian friend is on a family visit
and Owen is possibly very busy.
But having two as friends is better than none,
and sharing poems with you is still lots of fun.
Ol' Man Keith, your verse made me look up John Donne, since I remembered little about him. My goodness, what an amazing life he endured, with so many varied religious experiences and allegiances over time, with a diplomatic career, political and legal professions, writing as a pamphleteer. He was married to a woman who bore twelve children, nearly half of whom died, and she herself died five days after the birth of the twelfth child. He later served as a member of parliament, earned an honorary doctorate, and was ordained as a priest of the Church of England. That's a pretty amazing career--I had no idea it was so complex. I'd love to know more about your interest in Donne, and thanks for waking my interest in him on this quiet Sunday.
I’m very late to the Sunday party. Thanks for the Donne poem OMK.
Misty- Frank sounds like one of those bland (if sporty) men who are sometimes overlooked by the women. Imagine his fiancรฉe having to verify that he wasn’t telling a lie in proposing. But she sounds like a “low maintenance” woman who doesn’t require a lot of fuss. But I am perplexed by the “courting under a canopy”. Perhaps that is an ethnic traditional custom?
Thank you so much for checking in with us after your busy day, CanadianEh!. Hope you had a great time. And, as for my verse, I had to put "canopy" into it because that was one of today's Jumble words, and that was the best I could do.
