Feb. 7, 2021 Sunday

|| stoop, tease, dismay, verify, impressive. || swerve, levity, afraid, bemuse, liquor, pirate, it was a super idea.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Today's J6 words inspire a poem about a non-PC incident that belongs
back in the day...

"When Disney Thought PoC was a Super Idea"
I'm afraid it was merely a bit of levity,
induced by too much liquor,
and a dubious sense of gravity
that caused Pirate Pete to pick her.

He was supposed to choose the comeliest wench
to be his captive girl.
Instead he chose Miz Fredricka French
to give the ol' crone a thrill.

She had only come to the pier that day
to serve as a prim chaperone.
I witnessed as bemusement carried her away,
saw her swerve & reel,
then fatally keel
from the dock to the foam.

(Alas, to start her day as a proper duenna
& to end it all in the depths of Gehenna!)

Many thought our congress-critters
Were stooping to assuage their jitters
By kicking Marjorie Taylor Greene
Off of every committee team.

She'd teased them with her kooky rants
Of Q-Anon lies and flaming pants!
But now that she's got time to spare,
With dismay we'll she her everywhere!

She'll call for commissions to verify
Those Jewish space-lasers in the sky!
She'll create conspiracies from thin air,
And spread them impressively to share!

Superman liked the crime-fighting career idea.
(It was either that, or heat-vision-cooked pizza.)
He was bemused that, invulnerable, he'd not be afraid.
(Tho the yellow sun-burning made him keep to the shade.)

He could hunt down the Mafia or pirate rings.
(But RICO arrests are such iffy things.)
He could be a role model for Justice and Truth!
(While his costume provoked levity among youth.)

He would not swerve from his course of honor!
(His cape helped him fly without pitch or yaw-er.)
He'd be sober and steadfast to his duty!
(Liquor never made Kryptonians boozy or woozy!)

Wow! Wow! Amazing Sunday morning poetry--thank you, thank you, Ol' Man Keith and Owen. Exciting and brilliant! Loved the way you worked the Jumble words into your kicky (I had to look up the word) verse, OMK. And your first poem just blew me away, Owen. Almost embarrasses me to add my lame offering, but I'll do it just to emphasize the brilliance of yours.

"Happy Marriage"

The Connors lived in the city
enjoying their days of levity.
They had courage and nerve,
their goals never they'd swerve.
All their debts they had paid
and were never afraid.
Their friends they'd amuse
and their kids they'd bemuse.
They would never bicker
over who'd buy the liquor,
which they didn't have to pirate
but paid at full rate.
Their suppers with snacks, soup and beer
were a totally super idea.
And so they managed to bridge
a happy and loving marriage.

"Here's More--the J4"
Owen inspires us, his disciples, to excel
with exemplary verses filled with hints.
His site is impressive, permissive as well,
and his poetry shows that he's the prince.

From Marjorie Taylor to Superman,
he teases us, but we never dismay.
He chooses topics from what's at hand,
from comic-con mythic to news of the day.

He doesn't stoop to insults, that's not his style.
We gain in stature by emulating him.
He challenges us in the range of his guile,
his facts can be verified; his opinions genuine.

He can do high brow and low brow and much in between,
(Cf. the nobility of Kent to the vulgarity of Greene).

Peeps like these Connors rarely get extolled.
Their virtue makes them bland, too "vanilla" to have a "story."
But along comes Misty, for whom a happy marriage is Gold,
to bless these good folk with a touch of poetic glory.

What their lives may have lacked in drama,
in setbacks, or climactic thrills,
is made up for by a loving Mama
and a Pop who handles the bills*.

So, we thank you, Misty, for your good heart
that beats in sympathy with such goodly folk,
these salt-of-the-earth types who rarely see their part
taken up so sincerely--and not as a joke.

And who's to say the reason they didn't bicker
had anything to do with that all that high-priced liquor?

Erratum, in ode to Misty ~
= strike the first "that" in the final line.

De nada, Owen ~ You must know nothing quite compensates for your mentorship.

Thanks, Misty, for your friendly words on my 1st effort today. But I am not sure which word you had to look up...
