I finished this one late last night so don't read further if you haven't finished the puzzle and don't want ANY input. I often surprise myself when the correct word just seems to pop into my addled brain1 as with 1, 2 and 4. I struggled with number 3 (LACCEN).
Once I guessed the first four-letter punny word in the answer, the rest jumped off the page at me.
The Lincoln-Douglas debates had provided a forum For political differences to be discussed with decorum. They were widely reported as print-media news That the populace consumed like savory stews!
But partisan feelings were high, hatred held in its grip, Contended by Southern drawl versus New England clip! Should the Union be dissolved with feelings so wrought? Should the dreams of the Founders be cancelled for naught?
A war was fought and the Northern cause prevailed, But unbent, in defeat, the Confederacy still assailed. Alarm remained, for the South passed Jim Crow laws Generations passed as Blacks fought for their "caws"!
Now this one was funny/punny. Corny as hell, but it's what I look for in a true Jumble final answer. Contrary to Bill G's quick success (above), I labored a bit after the first word fell into place. I was still doing mine in my head (w/o pencil or paper), so I had to work a bit to keep all the remaining letters in mind. But by the time I got up (from bed) and walked downstairs, the full impact hit me. Curious: one of the words I'd been tossing around was CALM, the very opposite of what was needed.
You know, I also wondered how Owen got to the Civil War from the jumble But then I took another look at the first two word clues and thought that those were the people (so to "speak") for whom talking was not enough. Or maybe not! But also that pun in the solution suggested his theme, maybe? Forgive me, but I love to try to figure out processes. It is, in any case, a great synopsis. The jumble clues were pretty simple, and the punny solution made me laugh and groan at the same time -- just what great puns do.
I'm having a great morning! Got almost the entire crossword puzzle with just the tiniest bit of two letter cheating, and had only a moment's hesitation with item 4 on the Jumble. First checked to see if I could find a 5 letter word in the list and there it was, calming down any worry I might have had. Finding the 3 letter middle was no problem, and then there-- TA-DA-- was the obvious first word solution, confirming that I had no need to worry! Yay!
Ironically #1 gave me trouble . When I had words I wrote down the letters but in different order . And #3 stood out. #1 was obvious and how many 3 letter words are there with the remaining letters .
I lost the last post because I went googling about the civil war .
Words 1 and 2 came easily. I needed a hint on the first letter of 3, and 4. On 4 I confirmed letters 2 and 3. I had 4 and 5 reversed. When I switched them, Ta Da. I guessed correctly at the first and second words of the sol. This helped with the last word.

Owen, this approaches epic status. How you could make the leap from today's cartoon crows to a Civil War summation is just beyond me.
