|| || penny, swish, garlic, groovy, growing pains.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Brucie had a secret he could only share with few.
Revealing it to light of day was what he couldn't do.
A few might think him groovy, most the boy would shun.
And those closest to him, the news would surely stun!

He had a custom sleeping place, it cost a pretty penny.
He wouldn't eat Italian food. Garlic? No, not any!
Keeping secrets wounded him, and the pain was growing.
He was going batty, and besides, his fangs were showing!

A vampire must be true to self, he couldn't hide forever.
His coffin held him all the day, nighttime he was clever.
The way he'd swish his satin cape, red with gaudy green,
He controlled the runways as the vampingest Drag Queen!

I did not mean to offend, Sandy, but to make light of your earlier notice to me. To be honest (in my turn), I was uncertain why you bothered to single out my hints as the only ones that seemed to need avoiding because.... Well, I really wasn't sure why.
You may have noticed that I never use the actual words of the solution when I offer my suggestions. I just do my best. Beyond that I am stymied how better to disguise them.
I am truly sorry. I guess.you will have to keep your distance.

Okay, let's see now...
If I try a new mode of hinting, I may find myself All in the Thicke of things.
(Hands up, please, if you find this too blatant...)

I never got around to doing the Jumble yesterday, so it was great to work my way through this easy Monday one today. I always like the way you work the words into your poems, Owen. The solution to this one made me laugh, and I always like the cartoons, with that little plant on the ground in the background. Have a good day, Owen and Ol'Man Keith.

OMK, I am sorry. Truly. I never meant to hurt, but that's no excuse. One reason I avoid your clues is that you generally post early before I've finished the Jumble, which I do right on this site. I've solved it by the time most others post. I'm pretty competitive with myself and try until I feel I've given every possible effort alone. Occasionally I do go to Owen's poem to search for a word, but that's almost like doing another puzzle, he hides them so well in the context of the poem. At any rate, I do try to avoid even that help if at all possible.

And oh yes, I did solve it today before looking at poem or comments. Cute and funny.

Thank you!
Of course I accept the early timing of my posts as a valid reason to avoid reading them--before you do your own solving. If you had said that at the start, there would have been no misunderstanding. I get it now.
We each have our own way of giving and receiving hints, and I enjoy the differences. Early on I didn’t understand this--and even complained that Owen uses either the exact words or near-variants. Now, along with his rich poetry, I enjoy his cleverness in “embedding” the naked answers. For my part, I still like to rhyme or otherwise “allude” to the solutions.
To each his/her own, sez I!

As usual I knocked this off by noon time. Somehow GARLIC fell right in.
