I hear they rent horses by the day at the ranch.
Sometimes they have unexpected results, up at…

Rancho Astound

The wannabe rider drank his fill of nog,
then spurning the offer of a sweet-tempered mare,
chose the bronc instead & took him out for the slog.
(This was a horse you’d only ride on a dare.)

The damage was general; scarce an unbroken bone.
“Topper” trotted back on his own,
once “Hopalong” got thrown.

"Recovery"

Frank had to admit he drank
and that made his reputation tank.
At first he refused to turn
and did recovery efforts spurn.
But he couldn't hedge the damage
and it was time to turn and learn.

In recovery he was not alone
and had many options thrown
for help, and new paths were shown.

And so Frank came around
and now stands on a whole new ground
with the healthy new life he's found.

Frank the tippler must be glad he fell into your hands, Misty, rather than mine.
My "Hopalong" nog-drinker didn't fare nearly as well. I reckon anybody who "did recovery efforts spurn" deserves whatever bad end comes his way.
You were kind enough to allow Frank the time he needed to learn his lesson.
I guess I learned my own lesson from an alcoholic father and two granddads.
Also a sad sister.
Or maybe I just lucked out in the gene-game.

Sorry "Hopalong" got thrown, OMK. Tell him to get in touch with Frank to get information on the recovery program. I'm sure he'll soon be fine, and able to ride "Trotter" again!

The horse was “Topper,” not “Trotter.” I had to look it up because I couldn’t remember Hopalong Cassidy’s mount. My sister was Hoppie’s biggest fan.
I don’t think Topper wants anything to do with my guy now, even if he tries re-hab.
Horses can tolerate drunks, but not show-offs.
