|Smiley face| _swish, modem, lizard, larger, grilled him.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

A reader may think of majestic Everest or stately Denali, but remember them as they may once have been, puny and…

Grim Hilled

The swish & swoosh of a phone modem
annoyed the ear but affirmed contact.
These days it seems an oldtime totem,
an emblem of progress frozen in its track.

A larger picture might translate the scale
of passing Time to one of Size.
From past to present, imagine a whale
magic-grown from minnow. To hyperbolize,
think of a tiny eft, or even, maybe, a lizard
changed to a Fafner Dragon—by a passing wizard.

For it must be sorcery to summon up such changes
that Time doth forge, as it rearranges.

Technology marches on to the future,
Dial-up modem, to router, to wi-fi features.
Kids stopped playing ball, vid-games instead.
Swishing a basket ball could be any lunkhead.

The number of players grew larger each year.
So many online was causing leaders to fear.
Enlistments were down, armies had no soldiers,
That was when the real addictors became bolder!

The fleet of saucers landed without opposition.
The alien lizards of all governments took possession!
The Earth was captured, but one man tried to fight.
They grilled him over coals, for a banquet that night!

"Animal Safety"

The zoo-keeper worried that the blizzard
would swish fish, and rodents, and lizard.
So he bought a modem to code them,
and a charger to monitor them larger.
That way if there were dangers,
it would clearly show them.

Because he was so skilled
no beasts were grilled or killed,
and his hopes for their comfort and their safety
were readily fulfilled.

Y'all have covered the J's so I'm going back in time like OMK for one of today's words

Swisher Mack he was called, he had an eagle eye
But he warmed the bench like Wilbur and here's the reason why
Though sturdy of build Jimmy was stuck to that seat
For truth be told, Swish was born with two left feet

He could reach above the rim of that we needn't quibble
But alas, with pellet in hand, Swisher just could not dribble
But he wasn't bothered by absence from the starting lineup
His greeting to one and all was "Hey dude, what's up"

Well, some poems today discuss changes of time and sizes of beings and events.

Ol' Man Keith imagines it might take sorcery to make such changes, while Owen's verse predicts that technology may destroy humanity at some point.
Misty's zookeeper uses technology to keep his critters safe, and Wilbur's handicapped guy just wants to play a little basketball or something.

Lots of different worlds at play here, and we'll just have to wait and see how they all progress.

Owen envisions a sad future for humanity, with ETs enjoying a gourmet cookout. (Close to Sandy’s visualization.)
Misty bends some verbs to serve in the service of zoo beasts. (Humpty Dumpty at work)
Everybody’s showing up today. Hump day at its best…

Wilbur too. He explains the appellation “Swisher,” leaving out any sexual connotation!
