In the days of Egypt's glory
Hieroglyphics told the story
Of a mummy's mortal life,
It was all that they could write.
As the ages passed no language
Could stand without its baggage.
New words were coined or borrowed,
Old ones died, and writers sorrowed.
Oft words of eld were copacetic
Some could freely be poetic.
But our modern story lines
Are entombed in the L.A. Times.
What a great idea! I can see how the first clue suggested your story line, but the way you ended it is just superb. It's rather like going on a long trip and coming home again, don't you think?
I thought the jumble itself was medium -- in difficulty and in solution cleverness. For me, Word three was a little trouble, but not too much. And the second part of the solution was obvious, which made the first part emerge.
Well, word 3 gave me trouble also, and I therefore depended on Owen's poem to help me out with that one. Once I got it--Ta DA, as Ol' Man Keith would say--I got the reveal as well. Very cute puzzle, just right for our 21st century.
Owen, I'll freely admit your poetic muse gave you timely inspiration! That last line is especially appropriate and well placed. I found the entire J quite easy and though the third word took a few seconds longer than the others, it unscrambled in due time.
Well, for some reason this one had be stumped as no other could. I was barking up the wrong trees for too long. My first thought was that the second word needed to carry through the same past tense as the caption had begun. So, I was working with words like "timed" and "mimed" rather than the obvious. (One letter can make a helluva difference.)
Then I went for words that were fancier, like "reset."
Eventually I got there, but not without some sweat and reflective cursing.
My Ta- DA! arrived rather late, and with its tail 'tween its legs.

But you did it, Ol'Man Keith--Woohoo!
Words 1, 2, and 4 came easily. I struggled with 3. Had a good letter for the last one, but it was wrong. A hint, and confirmation that the 5th letter was correct allowed me to see the word. I stared at the solution for a long time, and it came to me.
I tried PRESENT and RECENT(5 Ltrs, duh) .I figured I had the second word .
Meanwhile I couldn't decipher #3 . Fortunately, two of the letters were needed for the second word of the riddle .
Here's my list of possiblities for#3:
PICOTE
IEPOCT
COPIET
PIECOT
PECOTI
Then I got it
I see Owen borrowed from Jeff W .

Yeah, I borrowed from today's crossword. I'd ask, "Ya wanna make something of it?", but I already did! :)
