Who of you can blame me for being such a grouch?
I've gotten old and frail in ways I no say about!
I can't be sixty-eight, I'm barely out of school!
My life and body must be playing me for a fool!

As my faculties abate, my hearing's nearly gone.
My eyesight is an issue, I may not drive e'er long.
My legs no longer can support my barrel of a gut.
But insurance offer junk mail, of that I have a glut!

I must see my doctor on a frequent, regular basis,
And get a colonoscopy, just to cover all the bases.
Oh, when will I once more be as fit as seventeen?
Never more in this life, except perchance to dream!

The poem is solid, but the J answer seems unusually awkward today. The homonym works, but something about the interplay of a plural noun in place of its singular sub is jarring.
How do others feel?

OMG, Owen, your depressingly clever poem strikes far too close to home! I call it crankiness, but it's the same thing, from the same causes.

Yes, OMK, I too found a bit of awkwardness in the jumble solution. But I won't be as definite as you were in describing it. In terms of solving, the clues seemed easy, and once the letters for the second solution word were removed, the first one popped out to complete the phrase.

Owen, your heartbreaking account of your experience is indeed followed here by a heartbreaking poem. I couldn't even read it for the clues--just to sympathize with you once again.

I got all four Jumble items quickly, but am having trouble with the reveal on the bottom. Wait, Sandyanon, let me try your strategy of getting the second word first.

Thank you, Sandyanon--it worked! I got it, even though I sure don't know my baseball very well. Again, many thanks!

Again, my sympathies for your recent trials. Your poem ends on a real truth. Despite the havoc age imposes on our bodies, dreams sometimes offer compensation.
While I can barely manage to walk across my living room these days, I still enjoy running and racing in my sleep!

LOL.

Timely baseball theme . I touched them all today . I was over at CC-VILLE and saw Owen's post and dashed over here .

Sorry to hear about your troubles .

Got the 4 words after some juggling of the last 2. Couldn't see what the solution could be for a long time, took hints for the 1st letter of each word, got the 2nd, then the 1st by elimination. OMK I agree it's a bit awkward.

Owen I do sympathize. I'm 74 and have never been athletic or even very fit, actually was quite obese, but I was pretty strong. A few years ago I fell & couldn't get up. My wife is quite feeble herself, fortunately her son was here and was able to levitate me. This scared and shamed me into exercising to strengthen arms and legs. In the process (and also from being generally sick for awhile) I lost some weight. Now at least I can get to my knees and up from there, though still with difficulty. I hope you get the help you need to overcome this.

Dear Owen,
I know you said on the Corner that you always have your cellphone with you when you go out, but don't bother at home. For what it's worth, here's a view from a compulsive scaredy-cat; probably influenced by that stinky commercial that goes, "I've fallen and I can't get up!"

I carry my cellphone everywhere, including from room to room when I'm at home. It's lightweight and doesn't take up a lot of space. I live alone and I figure at least I have a better chance of calling 911 if I fall.

You might want to consider it.

OMK, I agree . Since our crowd seemed to get it fairly quickly, the homonym seems to work.

It'll take a while to develop a new habit, but I'm going to try to do exactly that.
