The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

"Rabbit Rabbit, my Jinx Turnoff"
The focal point must reflect how we explain ourselves.
From the outside looking in, I can only wonder
how those who embrace gritty sects
explain what I see as a colossal blunder.
Take fascists for instance, Nazis too,
whether the shirts are black or brown
or button-down white,
they flaunt a world view I see as a zoo,
a bully-boy vision where might equals right.
But what do they tell themselves?
What is it THEY think?
It can't be alł nudge nudge, wink wink.

Or can it?

My goodness, Ol' Man Keith, what an extraordinary, broad, and serious vision in response to the Jumble word "focal" this morning. A brilliant beginning to our day here.

"Fair Contest"

The award would have to be local,
with contenders specific and focal.
No one would be able to nudge
or try to budge the judge.
As the highest award in the city
the decision is bound to be gritty.
Any effort to spurn or scoff
will produce an instant turnoff.
These rules guarantee the affair
will be honest and just and fair.

Any effort to flaunt this honest system
Will be met with the utmost vigor and vim

Just helping out Misty

No problems today but my newspaper inset was in the car(where it is now, I hope)

So I got everything solved, J and CC, but then was off and running to pick up tile at habitat for humanity.
.
Sometimes I slip in a poem late as I did last night near midnight. Since that's still just evening out in Cali I hoped y'all'd see it.

I kinda liked it. J6 words based on the J4 HYENA.

Not OMK's generous focal point towards scavenger beasts
But a nudge in the other direction vis a vis
The grit and guile necessary to flaunt the rules of the feast

Yes, these creatures are objects of scorn and scoff
They use the talents they are given, is that such a major turnoff?

I read your poem last night, Wilbur, and I was going to respond. But sleep came over me much too strongly to resist it. I didn't;t think I'd be able to post a poem myself today. I only managed that when I found myself awake with an idea around 8 a.m.

Thinking back, my immediate reaction was less to your verse's aesthetics than to the way it fit snugly into the old manner in which we anthropomorphize "dumb" animals--y'know, to fit them into human-like ranks. Much of the time it is harmless, as when I read my dogs' minds and interpret them aloud to my wife.
I don't think it hurts the animals--not much anyway--unless maybe it tempts our humane vet services to deny help to some poor desperate critter the volunteers happen to dislike.
No, I am thinking more of what the habit does to us, how we humans work our way deeper into the dangerous thinking that certain breeds, or tribes or groups, are inherently evil. I am not sure why we do it, but we have all seen where it leads in our behavior toward different human groups--AND I think it important to call it out when we see it.
Please forgive me: I know you don't mean to perpetuate a wrong. We are all so accustomed to it that it creeps in "below the radar."

Sorry! I really didn't mean to go on about this, but as you can see it is a topic close to my heart.

Misty ~ You offer us a fun series of rhymes, but I do hope the rules for your city's high prize are more extensive than this.
It is a very good thing, I'm sure, that the rules are "honest and fair." It might be even better if the rules went on to explain HOW to compete for the prize. Is it perhaps a contest for the best 500-word essay on the beauty of the city's landmarks?
Or a cook-off as on The Great British Baking Show, this time maybe The Lesser Laguna Beach BBQ & Repurposed Leftovers?
We don't need the full recipe--just the ingredients, Ma'am, and the time allotted!

Wilbur, I loved your two line response to my poem--many thanks. And I liked your poetic response to Ol Man Keith's verse as well.
Your comments us remind
that you are very kind.

Ol' Man Keith, your delicate and helpful protest
to my verse suggests it should name the contest.
Like me, I'm sure they know nothing about cooking,
so they'll have to just keep looking.
I suspect in the end it'll be book-ing.
