 || growl, thump, eyeful, abound, a "hole" lot.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Onomatopoeia is an awful sounding word!
Many exemplars of it really sound absurd!
And are they accurate? Often they are not.
Philippian meow is ngiyaw; miaau to Hottentots.

Instances abound for sounds without a vowel
The grrr of a dog morphs into a growl.
The creaks and groans and thumps at night
Become weird words that signal fright!

The orthography of sound often is an eyeful.
Is it really bang that you hear from a rifle?
But without these words ululating a lot
There would be holes where our language would be lost.

Good morning, and Happy Springtime--as of 5:37 a.m. this fine day in the Northern Hemisphere.

Thank you, Owen, for starting us off with a fine rumination on onomatopoeia.
Your questioning of "Bang" in particular caused me to smile (nearly aloud). I remember vividly having to invent my own sound when playing Cowboy as a kid.
When I held my hand up with two fingers extended to serve as the barrel of my anatomical six-shooter, I knew I couldn't make it fire by saying "Bang"--
No! The sound that issued from my mouth was a vocalized "Kkkhhh!"
It was never loud enough, but it came close to imitating the sound we heard in movies.
It was best when sufficient saliva built up to add a final "shhh" to each round, like an accompanying echo.
As kids, we were all into realism.

Today's Jumble:

"A Troll, a Kraken, or?"
It was a thump that got my attention
and a growl that turned me around.
That's when I got an eyeful of IT,
the monster that with horns did abound.

I shall never forget the view,
or my involuntary, "Woohoo!"
It belonged in a farm or a zoo,
but all it uttered was... "Moo."

OMK, you've reminded me of a story. It was OCS, 1968. We'd got ambushed and I cleverly circled around and ambushed the ambushers. But….

I'd forgotten one thing. No(Blank) ammo. So I did the next best thing.

"Bang, bang you're dead".

That didn't go over well. Added to the reputation(see my Managua post at CC).

Owen absolutely terrific this morning.

"Pound Hound"

Scotty was a miserable hound
whose problems did only abound.
He was not a great eyeful
and with bones he would trifle.
At his keepers he'd growl
and when sad he would howl.
Yet his owners bought him a cot,
liking him a whole lot,
still happy that Scotty they found
the day they went to the pound.

Ol' Scotty was an unpleasant chump,
lucky his people didn't give him the dump.
He greeted each day with Grump, grump, grump,
& nobody cared to give him a thump.

Seems a shame poor Scotty couldn't enjoy life in his new home so much as his owners took pleasure in keeping him!
I wonder if they had a vet check him out. Sounds like he may have been in pain all this time.
Maybe he was a moody soul, a unipolar depressive, not devoted to bringing joy to others.
Sad.

Woohoo! Woohoo! Misty got a shout-out in your morning verse! Woohoo! Many thanks, OMK.

And Scotty too thanks you for your kind words Ol' Man Keith. He really appreciated them, until he read your poem, which made him a little sad. Well, you're right that I was unfair to him, but he should have been more cheerful.

You are more than welcome, Misty.
I couldn't resist the "Woohoo," as one of its purposes must be to register astonishment, such as my narrator experienced on seeing the creature so suddenly up close.
But, no, I didn't think you were unfair to Scotty (because you neglected one of his clue words?), but I thought his human peeps weren't taking proper care of the little guy.
Maybe you just left that information out. I'm sure Dr. Pol would have run all sorts of tests on him to determine why he seems so out of sorts...
