The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

At one of the early meetings they presented an award
To Harry for seven years of sobriety. Chet thought "Reward?"
I thought we did this a day at a time. His Sponsor smiled.
It's not for Harry but rather the newcomer, a relative child
To recovery. We wish to plant the seed that if a rummy
Like Harry can stay clean there's hope for any dummy.
In the old days they'd make up their mind and pledge to quit
And after a few days, weeks or months they'd have to admit
That without the program of recovery as presented by the founders
Their unaided efforts were in vain and were sure to flounder.

An excellent response to the clue words, Wilbur!
I thought when I saw certain key words in the lineup that this Jumble was perfectly made for you. And you did not disappoint.

Here's my response:

"Our Card Champ"
Our gin rummy club awarded its tournament prize
to George for taking seven of ten hands
at the top table. George is modest, just one of the guys
who hates to strut & preen in front of his fans.
He assigns his talent not to personal genius
but to a regular honing by partners in the club.
Hand on heart, he pledges that his card-spotting keenness
is the result of how they all worked to shape his mind up.
This is a man who refuses to accept any credit
unless his colleagues agree en masse to "aid and abet" it.

"Poet"

Molly made up her mind
she needed some money to find.
She began by playing gin rummy
but she turned out to be quite a dummy.
Then an editor did her assign
to come up with a clever rhyme.
To this task she finally did pledge
and through hundreds of words did dredge.
She discovered she was a bard,
and finally won her award.

Wilbur, great to see that Chet was impressed by Harry's success.

And, Ol' Man Keith, also nice to see George get the credit he deserves.

Wilbur, I am finding your posts to be a fascinating look inside AA, and I thank you for the education.

Thank you everybody. Gin rummy is very scientific and like bridge a class A player will regularly beat the B's.

Misty, if you weren't already an accomplished emeriti* and author you could make a few bucks at an ad agency .

George is probably making a few bucks at the Club.

Although I never consciously intended it, my golf skills improved measurably when the money was on the board.

The slice straightened out and irons were crisp and best of all, the putts dropped.

* How did the session with emeritus go?

Ps, Sandy I'll keep'em coming if you want to read them. It's easy for me but I'm having trouble with one of the Saturday J-words

Wilbur, thanks for asking: the Emeriti session went well and I am always thankful for the members who work hard to look after the needs of retired university faculty.
So glad that your golf skills are so strong and that you're golfing so well.

Misty ~ It is good to read that Molly finally made a buck, but if it is only through writing her poetry, it is unlikely to earn her enough to make a living.
Still, if it is only to gain an occasional extra sum, she may be able to shop her skill around to various mags to keep it worth her while. It's good to know she can earn anything at all practicing our shared art.

Wilbur ~ I think George is a very rare specimen. He'd be loathe to accept a buck off anyone--unless the betting sorta evens out by each evening's end.
The guy is the original for being in it for match sticks and "just for the love of the game."

As for folk becoming "very sore losers," what do you say to 49-50% of the country?
