The banquet was in full swing, the waiters taxed to carry Servings for all to eat and drink, to help them to make merry! The portions were not skimpy, the wine beyond compare! The guest of honor much admired by all who gathered there!
The joy of the occasion infected one and all with mirth. The speaker praised the honoree, informed all of his worth! Then the guest of honor rose, and looking quite dismayed Admitted that he felt so humble, that to speak he was afraid.
He felt there was a chasm between his deed and the acclaim. He'd been marooned, not there by choice, he modestly explained. Since his location adjoined the ocean, and he needed dough, He caught the roughy with the diamond, when a-fishing he did go.
That jewel stolen from the crown, so many years ago. Pried loose and whisked away, to insult the nation's ego! And now he was a hero for restoring what was lost. The fine for fishing sans a license he hoped now would be tossed!
Well, I initially only got 1, 2, and 3 of the Jumble clues this morning and wasn't sure what to do next. So I read the cartoon, and looked down at the long answer and instantly got it! Woohoo! Now I still had the problem of filling in 4 , 5, and 6, and I only got 5 before I gave up and looked at the answers in the paper (The LA Times offers the Jumble solutions on Sundays). But of course I loved this Jumble puzzle, Wilbur, and yes, it brings back very happy memories of that sweet day many years ago with my beloved Rowland by my side.
Well the USA Today (6 word) one doesn't let you get a hint for the solution. Apparently the 1st 2 words are not the obvious ones, as the word after "and" would have to be 2 letters, and what's with that apostrophe? Besides I can't make anything sensible of the letters that are left. Too tired to try to rethink those 1st 2 words - apparently the only solution. Try again later (only 1730 here).
Mike, if we're doing the same puzzle, the word after AND is BE and the word after that begins with M and has to do with wedding. Does that help? Also the first and second word has to do with food.
Yikes! I worked it at the ChiTrib site, which had it 3,5,and 2 "7" but just looked at a couple other sites (NOLA T-P and USA Today) which is where I copied the picture, and see they both have 3,5,and 3'6 instead! I hadn't even noticed!
Thanks, Misty. I'm pretty sure it's the same one - with six 6-letter clues. I was sure the solution would be (it is late enough, right - 11:38pm CDT?) EAT, DRINK, AND BE MERRY (or maybe a pun on merry, such as married). But the blanks for the solution are ---, -----, and ---'-----. When in frustration I filled in EAT, DRINK, AND BEM'ARRIE it played the noise and said I'd completed it. Maybe not all the squares are displaying on my 11' MacBook Air, but I tried changing the size, both up and down. And I still wonder about that apostrophe?

I flew through 1-4 then got marooned I then went back to CC and read some posts . when I got back, 5 and 6 fell along with the riddle.
