The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Is it just me? Maybe on a word-sifting streak?
Or is today's jumble unusually easy? All four cue words fell into place, and the gag solution required no waiting.

There is fierce competition in the Gopher Guild
To be the Gopher rated as the gofer most skilled!
To become an apprentice to the Alpha Grand Gopher
Is a choice appointment the Grand Gopher can confer!
The duties of a Gopher are to dig and tend a burrow,
While the gofers ferry soil thru the subterran furrow.
They gather hay for fodder, for winter has no mercy,
And to line the width of the nestling's nursery!
Gophers plump up to be pretty, they don't mind their weight.
A rotund debutant for suiters hasn't long to wait!
Oh, wouldn't it be pleasant, a Gopher for to be,
Instead of just a gofer in a lackluster industry?
It's me too, OMK. All of the clues and the solution just popped right up. And what a nonsensical pun!
And the poem too, Owen, fun and silly. I do like the "homonymical" aspect a lot.
Well, I pretty much breezed through every Jumble this week, but I had problems with the third and fourth words on this one. As I hoped, Owen's poem solved this, and once I had the letters, the cute and funny solution popped right up. Then I went back and re-read Owen's poem for its own sake, and found it totally delightful! So, a great Jumble morning after all. The landscape in the cartoon is wonderful, with the water and an island below the hiker's mountain. And I liked the shouter holding his hands over his mouth to make the sound reverberate over the distance. Fun cartoon.
I found #2 and #4 as well as the riddle difficult. The latter because I thought the second word was IT.
The answer fit the hikers two fold dilemma. My friends hiked and I had to tell them that I'd meet them at the descent point.
Still smoked in those days.
Here's another bit of doggerel inspired by the CC xword:
The guild of the gopher clan
Were each a fierce fighting man
His sword of immense width and weight
Up went the English guns. Thus his fate
I didn't know you were a poet, Wilbur--good for you!
When you're employing the J words one takes some poetic license.

FLN, OMK, that's the first two of about 20-25 couplets. I'll try to find it. I posted a very long "song" about the NCAA at the end of as J-day .
I just saw an article about the NCAA and the utter hypocrisy of all things related to college basketball.
The song covered it all. Very long. I do have that one. To the tune of "Those dear hearts and gentle people".
Yes, dripping with sarcasm, scepticism galore.
