The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

FLN: What richness & variety in your two pieces yesterday, Owen! In your later poem, Wilbur, I particularly enjoyed the detail of characterization. But "Elrond" makes me think of Scientology. Can't help it.
Today's solution:
Some folk can boast of an extra digit, with six toes or fingers. In this time of social distancing, our Ken has an advantage. Known as the town wonder, he actually has six feet.

Are we filled with venom for what has befallen?
Now is not the time to be wrathful and sullen.
Burdens must be born, so let us bear with a will.
Resort to our humor as our responses fulfill.
Hatefulness will weaken us, and sap our souls
Instead see silver linings, nuggets of gold.
Pet adoptions are up, as people seek new friends.
Drive in theaters see surges in those who attend!
Climate's still changing, and Wall Street reeling,
But pollution is down, and the ecology is healing.
And to be candid, if we look under the covers,
Divorce lawyers soon prosper -- and infant lovers!
Enjoyed your poem, Owen. I mostly see the negative, so it's a good reminder. I love how you see couples either closer or completely apart.
The jumble clues were very easy, and I didn't really look for the solution til I had all the letters. Then it popped right out as well. Obvious but cute.
Looking at the cartoon, I don't think that tourist is maximizing his time when he wants to go from the Opera House back to the Tower. He could find lots of interesting things to do and see in town closer to the Tower and another day spend more time at the Opera House, maybe go to the theatre.
I was in Sydney in 1970 but I don't think used the underground to get downtown. I do recall seeing gentlemen in blazers and white pants bowling on the green.
Four J's came easy and at first even with the correct four letter word I flummoxed around with the second.
Tolkien's goal was to chart the growth of character in the Bilbos and Frodos and to some extent the various dwarves. In LOTR my favorite character Boromir, is a fearless hero devoted to his City. Fatally tempted by the Ring he dies protecting helpless Hobbits and dies like the legend Isuldur under a rain of orc arrows - but, in his case redeemed.
More on Bilbo later

Well, I had trouble with both the first Jumble word and with the solution this morning. Came to the blog hoping to get help, and Tada! Owen's poem gave me that first word, and Ol'Man Keith's gloss gave me the solution. Thank you, thank you both for this much needed help. I knew the solution had to have something to do with Australia, so the solution turned out to be a gimme after all. Cute cartoon, but kept wondering why the fellow on the side looks so morose? Does he not like tourists? Anyway, great to get help from our Jumble family, and look forward to your poem, Wilbur.
A smart poem, Owen, one of your most exact. The meter is neat, and the couplets serve as crisp aphorisms. I am only unsure how to read the tag of the last line. But good on you, sir.
Thanks, Misty! We always aim to be of help.

Hi, everybody. Nothing to say, really, except that I'm glad you're all here.
Keep posting, please. Stay safe.
Explanatory note to follow...
[Gandalf speaks]
"I am leery of Saruman, he of the venomous voice"
[Elrond responds]
"I say we humor him though not the ideal choice
We certainly have our hands full in the coming fight
To overcome the necromancer, we'll need the Wizard in White."
"We'll need the entire Council's spells to weaken our foe
Speaking candidly this much indeed we know
Without the One Ring that was lost down under
We can force his retreat and one day tear his fortress asunder".

Much that preceded LOTR was unknown when the Hobbit was published. Jackson actually fills in the background and Tolkien too reviewed it in appendix (es) to LOTR.
Sauron is the Necromancer and is holed up in Dol Guldur. The Council of Wizards which was headed by Saruman the White is successful. Saruman as LOTR reveals becomes evil as The Ring found by Bilbo begins to make it's presence felt.
The Council was successful but kept Gandalf away almost too long. If the Jumble clues cooperate we'll see how Bilbo gets to possess the 'Precious' Ring.

Wish I had read the Hobbit lit more recently. But I'll look forward to your continuation of the saga, Wilbur.
