"Contemplative"
I lived for six months at the Balboa Inn
and swam in the sea every day.
I loved to catch the sunset, sipping my gin
by my indoor window or out on the quay.

Often the light would verge on perfection.
It was always a time for lucent reflection.

PS. Depending on one's pronunciation of "quay," the 2nd line may read,
"... and swam every day in the sea."

"A Good Marriage"

When Bill and Jill did merge,
they promised not to diverge.
Each thought they had a good match
with a partner who was a good catch.
They decided to stay out of debt
to live well into their sunset.
Their spirits rose more and more
whether traveling or staying indoor.
And so, their lives were constructive,
productive, and never destructive.

A good, simple recipe for a happy union, Misty.
I always liked the "sunset" metaphor for growing old together. And your double advice ("stay out of debt," "traveling") is itself quite constructive.

I have another chapter of Ivanhoe but in combining two days I used Tue and Wed*. So that'll be a late post when the dust settles.

OMK, lucent indeed. Life on the quay leaving worries away.

Look at the time. I dozed off and never posted.

Ah, Ol' Man Keith, your morning's verse is quite magical, gentle and poetic, with the Jumble words worked in completely unobtrusively. Makes me want to go to the Balboa Inn and have a glass of---merlot.

This was back in 1981 when I stayed at the Inn with my teenage son.
It was quite a change for us.
That was when I had just come back to California to begin teaching at UCI. For the first 6 most., I was house sitting for a mutual friend in a beautiful home on Lido Isle--complete with a yacht tied up at the pier in our seafront "backyard." Then suddenly, the owner had a change in plans, and we had to vacate in two days.
The only place I could find so quickly was the Balboa Inn, out on the Peninsula. This was the old Inn, before it was renovated a few years later. It was quite a seedy joint then, with sloping floors and a tinge of urine in the air. But it did have the one redeeming feature of being right on the ocean. Back then I was a constant swimmer, and I found it a wonderful convenience--that no matter how cold the water in the winter months, I could get right into my warm shower after a good workout in the waves.
And of course there was the wonderful vision of the great Pacific Ocean with the sun--sometimes hazy or smallish, more often huge, massive--setting into that sea.

I've been moved from the hospital to a nursing home, and once again I have only my phone and no laptop, so Keith, it's up to you again tomorrow.

Technically, I do have my laptop with me, but no place to set it up.

Have a good transition, Owen, and it'll be great if you can stay in touch with us.
