The coven met in deep woods, away from prying eyes,
So they could do their rituals skyclad without surprise.
Thirteen women gathered, with Hecate at their head,
Who laid claim to having congress with the Devil in her bed.

In real life, Mary-Alice Grimes, pushing forty-one,
With an accountant husband, and two schoolboy sons.
But one week-end a month, with twelve sisters, old and young,
They make an exodus from the city, to where no ax has swung.

There is a certain fervor to their neo-Wiccan ways
So different from the pathways of their mundane days.
For in their sylvan glade their worldly woes they drop,
And from their cache of womanhood, their Goddess-selves adopt.

I feel Mary-Alice's passion for independence, Owen.. Your poetic tribute to her (& friends') divine aspirations draws us to her side.
I can well imagine her indignation when her local city council passed a new levy on mini-skirts, adding a tax upon dress to their long list of puritanical "sin taxes."

Had trouble with the third word in today's Jumble and had to rely on your poem to get it, Owen. But the poem was so intriguing, I forgot to look for the word and had to re-read it a second time before I got it. Then looked at all the letters, and Woohoo! I got the solution. It helped that the first two brief words were pretty obvious, with a nice pun, and so the rest was easy and clear. Looks like a pretty old-fashioned, all male Senate to me--no wonder they were so eco-unfriendly. So, I liked your comment, Ol'Man Keith.

A little secret -- Mary-Alice (not Grimes) was a girl who jilted me in college. I figured making her a witch who'd "had congress with the Devil" was fitting!

I tell you this to pad out the comments a bit -- we're not getting enough of them.

Here's another, Owen.

I had a really broken night's sleep and only got around to the jumble. Love the poem, which actually reminds me of early Outlander episodes, for anyone who's watched that.

The jumble clues were easy, but the solution took me a few minutes, though when I saw it, d'oh!!! I really love the pun, which cracked me up.

Would've worked better if the solution had been worded to treat the "Ax" pun as a plural, i.e., as "Acts" of Congress.
