I agree with Miss Tina's objections, although I am pretty sure her tirade can do little good. There is a core gullibility in our nature that will not relinquish belief in omens and signs--nor in the notion that certain traditional rituals can re-order the future to our benefit.
Even as our brains debunk such ideas, our sentimental hearts act as con-artists to our souls.

Well, this has to be one of the easiest Jumbles I remember. I got the first two items quickly (though I had HEAVE before noting the Y that made it HEAVY). And looked at the cartoon before finishing the other two. The solution popped up instantly, and after getting the last two Jumble words I knew I had nailed it. Woohoo, two days in a row. Thank you, Jumble constructors, for getting my New Year off to such a great start. OMK, do you really predict that the human species can never change? What about a thousand or ten thousand years or more from now (always providing we survive, lol!!). I don't think any of us can predict the future development of our species with any certainty.
Sandy ~ LOL, we live in hope. No, I wasn't aiming to block off evolutionary improvements. (Nor, for that matter, declines.) When I wrote that human nature "will not relinquish" superstition, I wasn't disallowing forever the possibility that a changed version of homo sapiens might get things right--just lamenting a weakness in the current edition.
But you raise a subject that is near to my heart. I am a nontheist, but I come closest to a belief in the metaphysical when I contemplate how our species develops. We seem to be "blessed" with new survival tools that somehow anticipate the next steps in our story. Certain branches of advanced mathematics, for instance, came to our more sophisticated scientists as purely abstract propositions decades before they were needed to make space travel possible.
Was this purely by accident? Are we on our way to becoming the Uebermensch?
