Riley lived a quiet life, in a leafy suburban way.
He'd hang his hammock from his trees, and laze away the day.
And when the air got nippy, in the early fall,
He'd stretch out on the couch inside, and not complain at all!

Riley loved his children, a feeling they'd return.
They didn't quake to fear his belt, altho he could be firm.
He'd treat them, not too often, to the ice cream shop.
And buy them both a double-scoop cone, cherry on the top!

Riley loathed his neighbor Dan who mowed his grass at dawn,
And terrorized the kids at play. He'd shout, "Get off my lawn!"
Their feuding went back years, and like would never stop!
The children asked Dan, "Why so mean?" He said, "Go quiz your Pop!"

I breezed thru words 1, 2, and 3. I had incorrect letters for the last 3 in word 4. Once they were corrected it came easily. Your poem supported the sol. beautifully.

Really easy jumble. Whenever q or z is part of a solution, it leaps out at me. I thought the poem today was just wonderful -- meter, rhyme, meanings, everything. Thanks!

Perhaps later this week we'll find out about the feud's origins.

3 and 4 went a little slower. I wrote the letters down and the words popped out . Naturally, considering the letters, the solution popped out too

FLN Sandy, yes I got the riddle but fell asleep before I could post. Then I reread Owen's last line and there it was .

Right where they aim to put the hay .

Well, this Jumble was a downright gift for me. I made a couple of mistakes on a Monday crossword--which is not a great way to get the week off to a good start. Then found the "gentle" Sudoku impossible. And struggled with the Kenken before I got it. By the time I got to the Jumble I was ready to give up. But all four items came quickly and the answer just popped right up. I didn't even need Owen's poem to help me this morning. Thanks, David and Jeff.

Another easy one, done in bed w/o benefit of paper/pencil... I think this hands-free method is a good discipline.
The 4 prelims were no obstacle, and I was held up on the final answer only for a short time while I tried to jam QUO into the first word's slots.
Silly me...

Nice, Owen.
A variant of the Life of Riley (plus kids & Dan, the grumpy neighbor...).

The 1st 3 words came pretty easily, but it seemed as though I was taking forever writing out all possible permutations of the 4th one before I got it. The solution came quickly, and I was surprised to find my time was only 2:01, one of my fastest ever since I started doing these online. Still only scored 990 out of a possible 1450.

William Bendix as I recall. Who's movie stardom was as a famous Baseball Player(Answer down below out of sight)

Riley goes way back but I seem to recall his work life juxtaposed with his home life .Was there a Gillis?
Then again there was Dennis and his grouchy neighbor Mr Wilson

Babe Ruth of course.
