The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Somebody is going to get poetically mathematical with this one, I can tell.
Yep, reminds me of long conversations about just how fast that old jalopy could go depending on the relationship of the variables.
Talk about wordy. On to Bilbo
WC
Bilbo had reached the door to Smaug's* lair
He knew the treasure was at the end of a winding stair
He needed a speedy getaway, a rapid way to go
He rapidly figured the distance and the ratio
Of the radius of cave, to the dragon's bunk
Yes, the worm was sleeping until he heard the clunk
The eye was open, and to make it worse
Smaug began a witty, wordy long discourse
Next, riddles, rings and ruin

Wilbur, even if I felt up to it (I don't), I think I'm going to let you run out this wonderful story! I'm enjoying it no end! And a vacation is probably good for me, not even worrying about poems for a few days!
I thought it was pronounced Smog. The movies came out after I'd lost a lot of my hearing, so closed captioning didn't correct me.
Delightful poem, Wilbur--many thanks. And glad you liked it, Owen, even if you don't feel like writing one today. I always like seeing how all the Jumble words are going to pop up in the rhymes. I had trouble only with the fourth word today, although once again, it was obvious once I finally got it. But the solution was quick and very clever and made perfect sense for the golf location. I love it when we get the cartoons in color. Neat to see all the different outfits and shoes and hair colors and styles, and the different colors of the discs. Charming cartoon. Looking forward to Ol'Man Keith's gloss too.
Owen, I just U-tubed, they say Smowg. I don't think I invented that pronounciation. I needed an extra syllable.
Yes, I'm getting warmed up. They're about to play
"A riddle game, which had no name..."*
Lov'n that folk are lov'n it

* Remember my "Rib Room, Hotel Sonesta"?
Re. The J...
I had trouble with the math. Once I got all the letters the very clever pun surfaced. Hint: I was a "Disbursement" Officer in the Corps.

Sorry to be so late to the party. I solved the Jumble last night but could not pause to work on the solution, as I was only half way through streaming the Oscar “best film” Parasite, and my rental time was running out.
By the time I finished the movie, I was too sleepy to return.
Anyway, I am back now, and when it comes to internet sites, this horse is of an entirely different color, requiring more thought than passive viewing. Thank you to all for your postings, for keeping the faith, and especially for his poetic prowess to Wilbur!

You said I could find a way to change the date over on my profile. But I did not see a clue or link there, at least not on the profile I use for this site.
Is it buried in the labels at the bottom of the page? Or somewhere else?
I would like to help, but I need more help myself. Please.
