The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Following Owen's helpful instructions, I have posted Feb. 17th as the new date for Jumble comments. But I do not know how to transfer a copy of the Jumble itself, the cartoon &c.
For now I must leave you to your own methods of accessing the Jumble. I'll find mine on the LA Times site--which I recommend if you are a subscriber.

The cartoon is up following my having a good nights sleep. No A or L, so Abe Lincoln isn't directly involved. For once, the answer is actually a pretty good pun! And we see why cats are so popular on the Web -- they are categorically better for purrfect puns!
Thanks, Owen!
It's good to see it--and in color, something the Times skimps on.
Here's my contribution:
She wrote with a Scottish burr, a quirk of her comic style. She took care to format her typing well, with an eye for symmetrical paragraphs. Depending on the content she would set her tab for two, three, or five spaces, saving the greatest spacing for her own folksy monologues. Today she was preparing a stand-up routine for late night TV, so she used herr best indents throughout the piece.

I got the four J's and quickly inked the obvious second word. And was left with?????. Then the v8 hit.
Looking forward to Owen's return to poetic genius .

What a great way to start the week! I got an almost perfect crossword, got the Sudoku and the Kenken, and then got all four words of the Jumble, and the first word of the solution--but was stumped by the second word. So I hoped that Owen's poem or some other blog source would help, and Voila! Ol'Man Keith's neat gloss did the job! I now got it without having to look it up, and just loved the clever, clever solution to the cute cartoon. A complete delight--thank you, thank you.
I was expecting something from Wilbur by now, but since it's almost noon here in Santa Fe, I'll scribble out something quick.
A President's Day poem for residents
Of purring homes, where precedents
Dictate that pulley toys with bells
Should be consigned to lower Hells!
Toys that squeak or make a noise
May number among feline joys.
But the stress of rings, bings, dings,
Drive us to drink a prune juice binge!
I was driving from Ocala back to SCC. Prior I needed a nap. Ok. Schedule Bilbo and Smaug in for tomorrow.
What was I going to do with those prunes anyhow?
WC
I figured old "prunefaced" 🐲 Smaug would fit them in somehow.

BTW, you can borrow a copy of The Hobbit from here. And Gutenberg, while it doesn't have the full text, has an encyclopedia of info about it.
