Am I counting right? I see 14 letters circled above but only 13 letters needed in the solution.
___________
... OK, I checked the LA Times, and we should not include the first circled letter of the first Jumble word. Use only 3 letters from the first word.

Got it now. Today's solution inspired this:

The bibulous prophet claimed his visions of future events were enhanced by certain vintages.
"Buy me that Veuve Clicquot '83," he said, "and I promise I will see more! This wine will have me seeing things with my eyes shut that [hic] you can't even imagine."

Bilbo responds to the dragon

"Riddle me this oh majestic being of olden times
Tell me of your mighty deeds in words, or better, rhyme"

Smaug responds in a riddle

"Men forget that there were days before time, 'fore hammer or the sickle
When maidens danced and robins sang. And too clever elves were fickle.
Who razed their city with fire and flame and led the mighty horde?
Who ravaged the haughty elves and now guards the stolen hoard?"

Re. Today's J. I did have to jot down the letters for 2-4. But I quickly grok'ed them. The last word of the riddle-solution was obvious and then the first and voila.

Not the greatest of poems today. Smaug's a big braggart; Bilbo should be more entertaining

Somehow this solution doesn't make much sense to me -- BUT they were . . .???

Anyway, I love your poem, Wilbur; I thought Bilbo was very entertaining.

Had a little worry only about the third Jumble word, but I got the solution quickly, and my third word turned out to be right. And Wilbur's fun poem confirmed it--thanks, Wilbur. Like Sandyanon, I too wondered about the logic of the conclusion, but maybe it was the grandfather clock that was new? Funny cartoon but can't believe those weird trousers and long socks on the two figures (both men?). And that sweater with the collar seems a little before its time too, doesn't it? Well, who cares, weird, inventive cartoons are still fun.

Forgot to say that I enjoyed your solution gloss, Ol'Man Keith.

If David and Jeff give me some material I'll try to make Bilbo more entertaining than that haughty worm, Smaug.
