FLN: Congratulations to Wilbur on his excellent poetry. It is no small feat to kick such life into those 7-beat lines. Bravo, good sir!

I thought I'd use this forum today to express my gratitude to the campus where I spent 35 wonderful years--and to the students who brightened my tenure with all sorts of performance projects, antics, and pranks. A ZOT of appreciation from an old UC Irvine Anteater!

I'm teaching my class on Edna St. Vincent Millay at the Senior Center this afternoon, and so probably won't check into the crossword corner until later, if then (tough puzzle this morning). But the Jumble was a delight. I got all four words with just a little work on three and four, and the solution popped right up. And thank you, Ol'Man Keith, for having your clever gloss support my answer. I also love that the Jumble has different racial figures nearly every day. Have a good day, everybody.

I can't get #3. I originally thought TAUNTS but wrong letters. I'm pretty sure of the riddle-solution although I'm a decaf black guy. Let's see

_ _ AN_ _
OR. TUNS
_ _ NA_ _

Unless that Starbucks special is not the second word.

I thought today's CC xword was the easiest of the week

As you'll see I finally got number three*

Smaug continues , he's angry again

"So what's your game little one. Sketch out your tawdry tale
What brings you to trespass my treasure trove
Hope to unlatch my secrets? Is it gold you love?
You'll not abate my fiery rage should you fail .

You'll never see the rising sun.
I'll tan your measly hide.
And then upon the sky I'll ride
And scorch those dwarves, everyone."

Bilbo responds

Calm down oh gracious ,oh noble mighty serpent
I've a story you'll want to hear,
Of adventures far from here.
Then you'll thank me a lot and reward me, not repent."

Just dropping in for a moment after completing tomorrows puzzle. Wilbur, you're doing a wonderful job! Tomorrow's words shouldn't be nearly as difficult for your story as today's were, so I'll let you keep going on it. You even used one of tomorrows words near the end of today's poem, a bit of enigmatological prescience!

And Keith, thanks for the proofreading again yesterday. I didn't check back into the blog until late evening, so didn't have a chance to thank you properly. Again, the error was my fault.

Thanks Owen. I'll try to get it in early. At least I didn't have to use PRUNE.

And thank you OMK. No one I couldn't get #3. I transposed and was looking for N,A not N,T. When Misty said #3 was easy I did a rethink.
