The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Olympus Mons on Mars, at fifteen miles high
Is any developer's dream of pie in the sky!
Any skier would be drawn to a resort
On that mighty massif, for the sport!
There is moolah to be made on that far-off orb.
To cajole a tourist trade should be an easy job!
It's an easy time, weighing one-third of Earth.
Fall the whole way down, you'll be barely hurt!
All that's needed is to build a rustic cabin lodge,
Created on the spot with three-D printed logs!
Tractors makin' roads up the mountain side
Shouldn't have a problem making boulders slide!
Writer's block the past couple days. The news has been depressing with its single-minded repetitiveness. I'm not too worried about getting the disease. I'm housebound, see no one except my wife, and she's working from home for the duration so her outside contacts are nearly as nil as mine. And, while I'm pushing 70 with a lot of health issues, none of them except age put me at any special risk even if I do catch it. No, it's that droning obsession that's getting to me. How many times can I be told to wash my hands without getting to really resent it?
Anyway, I've posted a few memes on my Facebook page to detract from it a bit. And will try not to mention it again in this blog.
It is very good to see you back, Owen, and with such an imaginative & aspirational poem.
I know how you feel, as we have so little occasion to leave the house ourselves-- my wife and I and her mom. I really don't need to be so discouraged from leaving home; it feeds my incipient agoraphobia.
As for the repetitiveness you dislike, I suppose it wouldn't be quite so bad for me if I didn't keep the news on constantly in the background.
I mean, what else are they going to be discussing?
Today's solution:
The young bride couldn't cook worth a damn. But she wanted to give her hubby a cake for his birthday, and she had seen one prepared on a TV show. The result was the mess of sticky goop she served him.
"Oh, dear," she wailed, "I so wanted to bake you a cake!"
"It's all right' darling," he said, "as long as we use the word 'bake' in quotes."

I did the jumble late last night or early this morming, however you want to look at it. The first clue gave me fits and I finally looked it up, but then, with all the letters, I could see the first word of the solution, and a little thought gave me the second. Found the pun entertaining.
Your poem is also entertsining, Owen. The idea of a rustic lodge on Mars is appealing. I don't suppose, considering the travel time, that you'd want to book it for just a short vacation! Unless maybe we could teleport there???
I'm definitely housebound, and finding it lonely. Spend a lot of time watching shows on Amazon Prime, Britbox and Acorn. Getting quite familiar with the various Miss Marples, for one thing.
Like Sandy, I got 2,3,4 but had to work on #1. But five letters? Not only got it but realized I'd never fit it into a Bilbo poem.
.
So I'm glad to see Owen has returned with a dandy tale. Perhaps, now that I think about it, since the one word is virtually the theme of Owen's Winter Sportsman's Paradise I can omit it.
Sandy, I've been binge watching episodes of Mom.

Wilbur, I could never get into "Mom". Have dipped into the Amazon series "Jack Ryan". Actually entertaining.
Owen, so good to get your clever poem this morning, with all the clue words and solution nicely worked in. Yes, the news is totally dominated by our troublesome and weird situation, and it just seems to keep getting worse and worse. Hard to keep our spirits up, but that's why our blog communities are such a blessing at times like this. And Ol'Man Keith, your funny cake story totally cracked me up with the witty gloss.
I had to work on both the first and fourth words of the Jumble, but the solution came pretty quickly, and I enjoyed the cartoon. Sandyanon, I too am watching a bit more television these days and my favorite is the dour and cranky "Doc Martin."
Braver than Jack Ryan, more clever than Doc Martin we bring you the continuing saga of Bilbo the Hobbit
Bilbo was trapped by Bill an ugly troll
Drawn in by foolish ego and a peskier purse
Too nervous and afraid to use his wits to cajole
His blubbering only seemed to make his problem worse.
These hulking theives had moolah they had stole
Making nightly inroads through valley and bole
About to roast Bilbo like mutton on a spit
When suddenly they heard a dwarvish racket
WC
Kudos, Wilbur. Never tire of reading about Bilbo. I see you did leave the first clue word to Owen, but all the rest are there.
Stay safe.
Glad you enjoyed it, Misty. I think it's one of my better efforts. I confess to a little pride of parenthood.
I know how you feel abt our "weird situation." The news is darker every day. I'm afraid we're only at the beginning of this terrible plague. From all projections, we'll be housebound for several weeks, more likely for months ahead. As the newness wears off and diseases begin to rise we'll probably be seeing a bizarre balance of boredom vs. extreme/eccentric behaviors.
Wilbur ~ Thank you for adding your cleverness to the site--and giving us an extra reason for visiting each day.
Hmm. I wonder how a "dwarvish racket" differs from the racket my kids used to make?
Maybe it's just higher pitched?

PS. I really enjoyed the Doc Martin series.
I just finished bingeing all of Call the Midwife.. Pretty sure I cd help deliver any baby now--or know when to call the ambulance.
Oh, and I finally started Succession.
~ OMK
OMK, I'm definitely trying Doc Martin and probably Hamish Macbeth. Call the Midwife isn't included with anything I already subscribe to, though, and I'm attempting to stick to no extra cost series.
May change my mind later.
"a dwarvish racket " is right out of the book.
Sandy, re J #1... Reread carefully, you don't have to read far. The "squeaky" purse is right out of the book too.
Thanks for the encouragement on my mostly mediocre offerings. I've been re-reading the story Here

Ohhhh! Wilbur you fooled me!
Yep, I snuck it in there a la Owen
