The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

Carl was inept in most matters of judgement.
The aroma of his efforts frequently was pungent!
The result of his tries to follow instructions verbal
Looked as if directed by the mind of a gerbil!
He was lousy in the garage, and lousy in the kitchen,
Used ten-forty in the fryer, canola on the pistons!
Carl was a disaster, a calamity in motion!
Worst, he didn't realize, he didn't have a notion!
But everyone has a strength, and Carl was no exception.
He loved everyone, and boiled over with affection!
He had loads of love, available to all and sundry,
That he spread with sunshine thru-out all the country!
FLN -- Keith, that tag line "if we look under the covers ... soon prosper ... infant lovers!" refers to the likelihood of baby booms in 9 months from the start of lockdowns.
Carl seems the sort often left behind in the customary competitions of everyday life, yet the happy soul most of us would prefer by our sides. Thanks for letting us meet him, Owen.
I don't quite see how today's solution is particularly responsive to the golf-themed cartoon. Maybe to real estate in general...
Oh, well, I'll just change the subject to a different sport--a wet one.
Sigmund owned several sport sailboats, enough to have his fleet of yachts assail double the number of hulls his chief opponent could launch in a friendly regatta.

Ditto FLN: Ah, I see now. Thank you!

Owen, thank you for introducing us to Carl. Makes life a little easier.
OMK, all those boats are making me seasick!! Hehehehe
I got the first three Jumble words quickly but just couldn't get the fourth. So I read the cartoon, and after a bit of effort, I got the answer, even with that long, long second word. Woohoo! That gave me the letters in place in the fourth word and so I got it. And Owen's delightful poem confirmed that it was correct. And then Ol'Man Keith supported it further with his complicated gloss. So, thank you both. And Swamp Cat, I too liked Owen's sweet, if dumb, Carl.
So I had no problem with the first two clues, but had to stare at the 6-letter ones for awhile. But once I had all the letters organized, and knowing what the first word must be, I saw the solution. I like the double meaning. And OMK, I didn't think the cartoon was particularly golf themed; by the golf course was just one possible choice of location, right?
I love the poem, Owen. Carl seems like a real person.
Bilbos journey takes a turn for the worse. Where's Gandalf!
"Oh lackaday, oh what ever can I do?"
Bilbo mused. It had been a long haul.
Up and up the mountain and through
The valleys. Bilbo felt inept, lousy and small.
The cave they found seemed suitable
Certainly, the best slot available.
"Lot's worse, if you ask me" Bilbo thought.
But their safety and comfort soon came to naught.
The cave wall had opened and they were attacked in the early morning
Bilbo , by some Hobbit sense was able to shout a warning
Dragged through the bowels of the cave amidst garish goblin shouting
There stood Thorin before their King, engaged in verbal jousting.

Admitting to a bit of political satire, the first two verses were written with Donald in mind, but when it came to the third verse, that was all Carl, and I was glad I had resisted the urge to give a more topical name.
BTW, note the map on the wall is the cul-de-sac the wife fancies, the model is the golf course the husband is shooting for.
Oh, and one more ps, note the jigsaw links in the right sidebar now also include The Hobbit links that Wilbur has provided.
Wilbur, CANOLA was a challenge even for me. I presume you broke it up in your first line "Oh, LAckaday...CAN I do?". I looked it up with little help. It's a portmanteau of CANadian de-acidified rapeseed OiL.
So, Owen, the first two stanzas of Carl are a real person -- who could never, ever fit your third stanza, of course. Here's one:
Carl saw no facts, all was subjective
On his critics he hurled invective
Lots of hate to all available
He spread in lies he knew were saleable
Feeble effort,but heartfelt
Owen, nice get. Yes, the dwarves and Bilbo used lard and bacon grease, perhaps sun,saf or other flower. Olive too . But not the 20th century concoction.
So...
I mentioned my trip to Longwood to see Arthur Ashe and other 60s tennis stars(CC).
I had a companion. I had met a girl who worked at a drug store. I suggested we go see the Tennis. She said she couldn't make but up sparked her younger sister. "How about me?".
"Fine I said , can you drive?". And she could and did. It was a great afternoon and at 3:00 pm she said "I have to get back home". I replied, "Do you mind if I stay for the end?". "Oh, no, I'm fine. Seeya".
So next day I arrive at the drug store and #1 sister is boiling. "How dare you etc etc etc. "
End of story, end of romance.
Ps, younger blood may have been only 16.
Sandy, before you start "boiling" Denver that's 50+ years ago. I said that I've changed. lol
Darn autocorrect. REMEMBER not Denver.
No Preview anymore.
Sandy, that is magnificent! All you need to do is put the correct name in there, snce Carl would never act like that. But I L.O.V.E. it!
Sandy, I'd say you do have talent.
Swamp cat, thanks for dropping in. We love laughter over here.

Owen and Wilbur, thank you both. I tried to incorporate all the applicable negative qualities, but did miss some.
Wilbur, why would I be boiling???
Sandy, I went off with younger sister (16?-I was 20), let her drive from bottom the the 'burbs alone and then when sister #1 got made just blew them both off.
Not exactly acceptable behavior in this time of me-too. Heck, the shoes been on the other foot: One girl said she hated the Redsox!!!
lol
WC
Boston to the 'burbs
Yes, but Wilbur, did you really think I would be boiling mad at you?? Give me some credit for being understanding, k?
My BIL passed away this afternoon. I wish I had known him better. This was not covid related, a stroke and diabetes complications.
Sandyanon, I loved your and Wilbur's poems too. What terrific poets we have on this Jumble! I am just awed by you all! Thank you for this often daily delight.
Owen, I hope your wife is doing ok. And her sister too.
And his wife in the Philippines. How alone she must feel.
