Got curious and looked up Noah Webster. OMG, he was certainly multi talented and with many interests. Much more than a dictionary creator!
So, though I doubt he personally hawked his first dictionary, he certainly published it.
"What to do?" I pondered, "Should I go long or short?"
As I awaited the cable from Merrill I recalled past junk I'd bought
From that penny stock peddler. Still losing sleep I thought
"I'd better guage my choices better this time. Eureka, 'OPTIONS'!"
But long or short, that is the question as I awaited word from my guy.
If I just had more means at my disposal. Ah, there it is. BUY!
Looking back,in the main, I should have entertained other notions.
Prompted by a clue from today's CC. I dabbled in options since I could gamble small money. Actually a terrible pick from my Merrill guy taught me to make my own picks.
The stock I dabbled in was my own company, a hazardous endeavor as it borders on insider trading. But I never had such info.
Later, when such info did become available I demurred. I finally got away from it as I heard stories from Gamblers anonymous types.
And in another note. Sandy, was Noah the father of Daniel?
Let's LIU. Apparently cousins

"All" means "Us"!
"The Baron mentioned a duck hunt, my dear,
but I thought him too sleepy to get specific.
Today I received a cable--right here!--
inviting us to his shoot: It's terrific,
a wonderful chance to improve our position.
It's set for Friday. But there's trouble in store,
trouble I say, for we must face derision
seeing we've never hunted before.
I don't even know the proper gauge
of shotgun to carry or if it's men mainly
who're doing the shooting. Are women engaged
as equals in killing--or to behave humanely
only? In short, are we about to elevate our social niche,
or be exposed as bloody beggars, nouveau riche?"

"Ultimatum"
Cathy sent her lover a cable
that put some things on the table.
Their affair had made her weepy
until each night she was sleepy.
She worked hard trying to gauge
an ultimatum to wage.
So she asked him to tell her plainly
if he lover her, or others, mainly.
He responded that of all his queens,
she was the dearest, by all means.
And if she was willing to marry,
their romance would no longer tarry.
This sorted out their mess:
and Cathy said, simply, "Yes."
Wilbur, I researched it online, and there's apparently no relationship between Noah and Daniel Webster. One lone website says they were cousins, with no explanation, but all other online sources say they're unrelated.
They certainly had very different careers.
It's interesting, I think, that in this day of ubiquitous CABLE TV, when "cablegrams" are pretty anachronistic, that all three of today's poems chose the old-fashioned interpretation of the word.
GAUGE earned more than one of its various meanings.
Wilbur ~ I gather from your follow-up comments that your verse touches on some anguish IRL in the market.
Ah, "You're a braver man than I am, Gunga Din." Following the initial pandemic fright, I ate my loss and--Chicken-Livered !--moved my remnant into bonds.
Misty ~ Your poem offered a natural, simple development, and yet you managed to build a bit of suspense in this old codger's heart.
I was glad for Cathy, and while the cable may have been outdated, it might have served as a legal doc in a later "alienation of affection" lawsuit.

I wish everyone a
Gleeful St. Stephen's Day!
Honestly, I am not sure of the appropriate greeting on the martyred saint's day.
But I'm pretty sure the way to celebrate is to stone a friend.

You Guy-uys!
Sandy, Wilbur ~ The Webster "relationship " is a mess on the web. Whether a relationship is asserted or denied, the bloggers just flat-out assume authority without offering sources.
One site has Daniel as Noah's grandpappy, with a family "tree" straight from somebody's imagination.
In these days of "fake news," I no longer trust either side of the matter.
The men were not not-related, that's all I'm tellin'.

OMK, as I alluded, I did ok as long as I didn't take any advice from my Merrill Lynch guy. Those guys that "advise" you to buy this and sell this are crooks.
Yes, I found that out to late. I've been out of the market for ten years now.
I hope you didn't take to big a bath in March. A great opportunity for a PUT* if you saw it coming. My son did. His thing is bit coin.

Your poems were a delight and wonderful, Wilbur and Ol' Man Keith. It's amazing that with all the incredibly busy holiday and family stuff we're all dealing with this week, we're still managing to write poems and visit with friends on blogs. We all deserve a pat of thanks on the back.
So I wish you all a calmer and more relaxing Sunday tomorrow, and a calmer and more relaxing week next week.
Cheers, Misty
P.S. Owen, I loved your poem on Facebook and thought it deserved much better than a C!
