The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.

I like that j4 solution. It took me what seemed like an eternity to figure it out, but then I really laughed when I finally did. Clever and cute 'almost' homonyms.

REMINDER:
If Owen needs me to post the J6 (the 6-word Sunday Jumble) today, I will be happy to do it, but please be aware I won't be able to put it up until mid-morning (PST).

Keith, I've posted my version, but yours would be better. As an experiment, try and paste yours on top of mine.

I'll give it a shot.

FLN Wilbur ~ I enjoyed your rendering of the occasion with Panza, Pablo, & co. Your objectification of the gang adds to the fun. I can't say I understand the context. (Like coming in in the middle of the movie.)

Okay, here's my response incl. hints to Sunday's J4:

"Fit to Fight?"
The plan seemed flimsy but there was a chance
frenzy & zealotry could make it work.
Was their unit capable of a unified stance?
Some of their front line could run truly berserk.
Others...?
When the tower chimed six, they all would find
whether savagery was a plus, or just men gone blind.

Apologies, folks!
My clumsy fingers have failed to bring it off!
I tried to post the LA Times J6 over Owen's J6 as he requested, but all we got--for a while--was a gray rectangle at the top the page.
It took several attempts to remove that block from the page. I think I have succeeded in returning things to the original status, but in the meantime, my own desktop version of the page displays it in only miniature in the middle of a screen wallpaered with 24 replications of the page. (My iPad version looks OK.)

Owen: I don't know how to return my desktop screen to its original shape--to get rid of this wallpaper effect!
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

The LA Times Jumble words made rhyming difficult, creating awkward moments in my verse. But here it goes:

"Courtship"

Bruce tried to deduce
if his hair he should spruce.
A neat girl he wanted to flirt,
and her interest he hoped he'd divert
by offering her a flower,
a gesture he hoped she'd devour.
He was looking for a mate
whose values would equate
with his, and lead her firmly
to connect with him quite early.
And so on dates they went,
exploring their joint element
until he realized it was wise
to offer her a surprise.
So one day he went down on one knee
and said, "Will you marry me?"
His courtship she wanted to bless
and so, happily, she said "Yes."

Probably on your Start menu, go to settings, then display. From there, it's too machine dependant for me to advise, but you should be able to figure it out.

Sorry, all. I'm not sure who posted the J6 today, but it is not quite correct. The layout of the solution blanks is not 7-1-8 as shown, but should be 7-2-8. Confused the heck out of me until I went to the Chicago Tribune site and saw it using all 17 of the clue letters. Whew!

Thanks, Owen. Yes, it's definitely something on my local menu, as it's only on my iMac that I have the problem. I went to "System preferences" and "Display," but the different settings did not help.
But I can narrow it even tighter. I have several pages up simultaneously on Safari, and it is ONLY the Jumble site that is affected.
I have now scaled the whole page differently, so the center area--with today's data-- is enlarged. I haven't solved the problem, but I am "squeezing" the wallpaper effect out to the sides. If I never get it fixed, it is at least tolerable now.
I am sorry I couldn't place the new J6 over yours. I am leery of trying again, for fear of a worse result.

Thanks, Sandy, for pointing to the discrepancy in the letter count. I hadn't noticed even though I had the LA Times version at hand.

Anyway, to get back to business, here are my poetic ramblings on J6:

"Surprising Development"
In the bad old days an “Invert” was a person who was Gay.
Some would be in asylums, Psychologists locked them away.
Now shrinks have spruced up their language, updated the DSM,
taken a firm stand for freedom! Let’s all say, “Amen.”

Do they equate their change with “woke”-ness? Are they now enlightened?
Ask any Devouring Mother. And their sons--who are no longer frightened.

Dear Misty,
I commiserate with your problem in facing today's J6 words, especially in the world of flirtation/courtship. Maybe a David and Lisa context would have helped, or a Lilith setting.
Your poem still manages to use--or at least hint at--most of the words.
Brava to you!
Let's all wish Bruce and his "neat girl" well!

Well, Owen, I can only apologize again. I thought I had it this time.
The J6 showed perfectly on the draft, but once I hit "Publish" it turned into this blank white rectangle. I consider it a step up from the gray rectangle I had before. But I had better quit attempting to improve things.
If you like, you might just restore your version of the J6.

Sorry, folks!

I have the J6 in hard copy. ASYLUM was difficult even after filling the solution and knowing the remaining letters:S,M,L.

Misty, love requited is a theme you often adopt. We can't get enough love and happiness in our lives as you obviously had.

OMK, is that a gang of mice? I recall when the clock struck one the rest escaped with minor injuries.

Misty, did you take a shot at the Saturday latimes xword? This was the week to FIR that usually difficult day. I had a technical FIW on not correcting the spelling of SALOON.

And today getting my mites, motes and MOTHS mixed up.

Wilbur ~ No, but that's an apt application of my J4 poem.
But no. Sadly, it turned into a rumination on any field officer's fears/hopes just before (an equally matched) battle.

Ol' Man Keith, I loved your "Surprising Development" verse--a delight.

Wilbur, sorry that I didn't keep the Saturday LA Times crossword. I did do it, though I needed a lot of help. And I liked your response to my verse today. I did find love and happiness in my life, but not until I was almost 50. And sadly, I had only 24 years with my sweet Rowland, until I lost him five years ago. But maybe that's why my poems are almost always upbeat rather than downbeat, because of those happy memories.

Thanks, Misty ~
I liked it too. A bit of a grotesquerie, perhaps.
But I suppose the Shrinkagerie can take it.

I liked my first one too today. It was maybe a bit too short for the point to land as solidly as it ought.
