|Smiley face| _aback, petty, squash, figure, straight a's.

The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

The Atlanta Braves are doing well enough, but they couldn’t sweep (win four straight) the NLCS or the WS.
The ‘Stros are…

Still Alive 4 Game 5

The “B”s didn’t get “A”s (‘tho they put up a fight).
It was petty he knew, but Snitker was sore.
He had figured to squash the Astros tonight
& was taken aback when they beat him by four.

Straight 'A's

The couple had a petty, but straight, debate
a while back, on their very first date.
He figured if he could josh,
they might their differences squash.
She laughed and gave him a whack on the back
and they're once again back on track.

Cool, Misty! Again, the brevity works well. You not only cover the J-words, but by breaking the first end stop you give the piece a more natural feeling.
And your "couple" practices a smart way of getting beyond their "differences"!

Thank you, OMK, for your nice
and very helpful advice.
Your own economy offers a role
which has become my poetic goal.

Fln, although I'd never reveal an actual clue ahead of time perhaps I'm guilty of just revealing my idea of difficult or not. BTW, my hard is easy for most and vv.

Actually, several posters seem to like it but perhaps my vanity is showing. Aa a favor to you I'll desist.

I'd given up on #4 and then I grok'ed the riddle-solution so I had 3 letters to find a refuge for although I needed an I not an e.

I agree with Keith that Misty has gotten smooth. A "mill" a day keeps the critics at bay.

I see I used AFLOAT twice last night. I'll try to continue but I'll need to reread my Sherlock

I have "The Annotated Sherlock Holmes " but only one volume(2?)

I also have the complete Holmes as illustrated in the Strand but finding either will be challenge.

I've gone back to reading. I watched a lot of tBBT , 2 1/2 Men, Mom, and before that 70s Shoe,Fraser,Cheers and Seinfeld. I've never seen a Cop show and Friends didn't interest me.

So...
I just finished Harlot's Ghost on CIA from 55-63 by Norman Mailer. And I'm back to Anna Karenina (poor Anna the best person in the novel and she's doomed)

Wilbur, just my two cents:
I don't think you ever actually reveal anything, but you hint awfully strongly sometimes. Just personally, I prefer to come at a crossword fresh without any preconceptions.

I'm looking forward to any new or continuing story from you. Do enjoy the way you keep them going.

Thank you Sandy. I value your input as I do Owen's. And for beginning a new saga, here's more Sherlock. (Next post)

I loved Holmes dearly but was taken aback at his haste
"Straight to the pier he shouted, we've no time to waste"
Although always on the square, he could be petty at times
Unquestionably unequaled as a master solver of crimes,
He blushed once figuring I was comparing the notorious Moriaty
As the Napoleon of criminals much like a certain party
Standing in my kitchen. "No, Sherlock, as he is unknown to the hoi polloi "
"A distinct touch, my dear Watson. A riposte I will always enjoy".

As a Conan Doyle fan and an unapologetic Holmesian, I jumped into your latest verse, Wilbur. I confess I found myself lost at the 6/8 mark--unsure then who was speaking and who was being referenced "standing in my kitchen."
Is that a personal allusion by you, Wilbur, or was it Watson who was speaking, or even Holmes himself?
~ OMK

Sandyanon said...

OMK, I believe it was Watson speaking.
I love the Conan Doyle stories, and almost equally I love the BBC Sherlock series.
So Wilbur, keep them coming!

OMK, The person IN the kitchen is Holmes. The other option is [Holmes said], [Watson said] that I used in Ivanhoe. Awkward.

Story:

Had some Lotto tix, misplaced them or so I thought. Actually I thought it was just one. C'est la vie.

So I'm in the car, dropped the keys and next to the seat, Voila

They were dated 9/25/21. But FLA Lotto has an instant option that yielded $2.00*2. So I just handed tix to cashier. Lo and behold...

I hear the Ding. Ding, Ding and beyond belief she says

Wait for it

Here it comes.

"You won $120.00!!!!!"

WooHoo as misty would say. Woodewoo Hoo

What can I blow it on?

Thank you for the clarification, Wilbur. Now it all makes sense.

When you find yourself in unattributed dialog, you might consider "He said, he replied, sighed, offered, opined, asked, wondered, thought, continued, riposted, &c. &c.", and in place of their names, "the Doctor said, Holmes averred, the great Detective suggested, the physician, the violinist, his friend, the writer, the cocaine addict, &c. &c. --
You get the drift...

As for what you can blow your Lotto winnings on, I would suggest, first, your car's horn! In thanks for its keys--that led you to the prize!

My apologies for venturing into your territory with my World Series ditty today. You are the true sportsman among us. I only look in on certain playoff games, and even then I just watch the later innings.

Houston was "Working 9 to 5" last night, for sure.

I thought the Dodgers should romp over the Braves in the NLCS, but this looks to be Atlanta's year. Is it the Confederate World Series?

The L.A. sports writers are already calculating $$$--which FAs among the Braves will be purchased by the Dodgers next season.

Loved the way you worked all the Jumble words and solution into your verse today, Wilbur--Woohoo!
(Well, except for the missing SQUASH, but your SQUARE came pretty close).
