The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

I have to say, the caption leading into today’s solution is remarkably awkward.

My response to this Jumble:
As an adult, he re-visits in dream his childhood fantasy of crusading in Hades with nothing more than a brand new holy Rood.
He does not realize how…

Mistaken (he is)”
He was shaky & thirsty as he emerged from the swamp.
His suede jacket crawled with chiggers & ticks,
and something on his heels was going, “Whomp whomp,”
all signs—Alas!—he hadn’t cleared the River Styx
(tho’ he’d prayed to conquer Hell with his shiny Crucifix).

Let's see how Chet is doing..

Chet had changed over the year, no khaki now he sported suede
He'd emerged from that cold, dark place. A new start he'd made.
Instead of hamburger he now had steak: his thirst was slaked with Coke,
His old friend Johnny Walker was a distant unmissed bloke.

John, his Sponsor, suggested helping a newcomer find the way.
And there he was, Eddie, shaky, bewildered and lost
No mistake about it, He'd bring him around no matter the cost.
"My friend", said Chet, "I want you to ask Him for help and call me every day".

That is great, that Chet can help someone else. I'm sure he'll find it very rewarding.

"Loving Nurse"

When Ed from his coma did emerge
he felt shaky, but ready for a surge.
His wife gave him water for his thirst
and with great affection Ed was nursed.
After carefully helping him bathe
she dressed him in his jacket of suede.
When he was ready for a break,
she served him a tasty chopped steak.
"Oh, Ed, you were sorely missed,"
she told him, and they lovingly kissed.

OMK, the solution is pretty awkward too, don't you think?

I agree, Sandy, but don’t solutions have a right to be awkward?

Wilbur ~ Chet is doing very well indeed! Is this present time or a flashback?
I wonder if I am following the right timeline with you.
“unmissed bloke”—that’s good!

Ah, yes, Misty,
Emerging is an excellent thing to do from a coma.
Other than that, drinking, bathing, dressing & eating are also winners!
I am really with you when you place kissing as the climactic event.
A simple arc, but true…

Sweet verses from everyone this morning, many thanks OMK and Wilbur.

Is your fellow going to be okay, OMK? I can't quite picture the nature of his dilemma.

And it sounds as though Chet is becoming a better and better person, Wilbur.
