The opening poem contains all the words (or variations of them) from today's Jumble.
Comments are welcomed! And couching them in Poetry is definitely NOT required.
Do not explicitly reveal any of the actual answer words until after closing time, but embedding them surreptitiously in comment sentences is encouraged.

"Computing them? Swell!"
Bet your bottom dollar, ya can't per-suede
a soul to overcome the tedium
of counting sheep to get to sleep--
not even a comedian.

Sure, it's worth a laugh to see funny lambs
in their jimmy-jams
balking at stiles.
But counting them will raise more smiles
than lead to slumber
no matter their number.
Sleep never out-weighs sheep
in the comedy on parade!

P.S. If anyone objects to the final hybrid word at the end of my first line,
I respectfully refer them to the Humpty-Dumpty school of thought.

"Persuading Suede"

William had to weigh
how much he wanted to pay
for that fabulous jacket in suede,
high above his wardrobe's grade.
His clothes were an icon of tedium,
and he longed for a brilliant new medium.
It would cost him a wicked dollar
but make him feel several feet taller.
In the end, his till he looted
because that jacket was just so well suited.
Yes, it suited him so very well
that he wanted to ring a bell
and yell, "Hey guys, look at me!
I'm thrilled and filled with glee!"

Ah, yes, THAT jacket!
I once owned a jacket of suede.
Recalling it makes me sad, I'm afraid...
I'd like to say Easy come, easy go,
but I left it in a diner in Mexico,
& the thought of it just brings me woe.

What to say about such a loss?
but Vaya con Dios...

Clearly a cartoon of 007...!

Jim/James Bond sits at right (stage left) in his tuxedo holding his martini (shaken, not stirred), while Dr. Evil (Ernst Blofeld) fondles his kitten, nearest the viewers.

Ol' Man Kwith,

That loss was really rotten
and not easily forgotten.
But the loss might be relieved
if you just roll up your sleeve,
and decide not to be afraid
to buy another suede.

Nice reply, Misty!

But I'm still grieving.
No, I'm not deceiving
you. I can't replace the old one
with an attempt to have some fun
with some new coat. Jackets are unique,
and I'm not some cold-hearted freak
who can substitute a stranger
for the one that's still in danger.

My loss was in 1985, Gal;
so the spirit of that suede is still alive, Pal!

The player opposite James, may be a character I don't recall from Casino Royal, but barring that, I think it may be Austin Powers.

The way the cards are laid out, it does not look like poker. Baccarat?

Ol' Man Keith said...

Yes, 007 was fond of Baccarat.
The winner is the players who comes closest to 9. I can't quite read the numbers on the exposed cards. 10s and face cards are worth zero, and aces are 1.
