Today’s Jumble haiku:
(Air Wick, Glade & other air fresheners are popular now, and not just for pumping pleasant perfumes but also for sprays that subtract noxious odors [lessening] from the atmosphere…)

“(A) Stunning No(se Tic)kle

Glade, battened on the
wall, concurs in wafting us
a fine, minus-mist.

Magnificent lucky guesses. I was looking out aimlessly into space before I made a loud din

Toning Rut (for) All

No noise in that glade,
Minus sun in the shade.
Batten down the hatches,
Lie down on the patches.
Enervating mud in those crevices,
Neutralizes anything that menaces.
I concur -try that spa
And you will say Aah!

A curiously entropic spa, CanadianEh!
One in which energized order collapses (“no noise”)
from, say, musicality into flat silence,
and the very mud debugs the bugs.
Your concurring “Aah”
is all you’ll have left.

"Up-grading"

Mary got a C-minus for her grade
which made her worry
and take a break in the glade.
Her studies she had to batten,
especially in the field of Latin.

Her teacher did with her plan concur
and supported her effort
her studies to spur.
So Mary got her next project running
and this time the results were stunning.

Her total grade was an A,
and Mary celebrated the day.

Good for Mary, Misty, not to let that C- discourage her from making an effort.
She was right to see that grade as unacceptable & to make use of it to spur her spirit and brains to action.
Haply, her success story can serve as a model for others. In the end, of course, somebody is going to get that C- for the term--as long as there is such a thing as a Bell Curve.

While on that subject, I was always grateful that my tutorials and classes for grad students--and for my undergrad directing classes--were small enough that I could get by without using a curve.
There is a certain sense to it for large required courses, but not for smaller electives in which each student deserves to be measured as an individual.

OMK- your Glade battened in the wall, releasing a mist, reminded me of the fragrances that some stores release at their doorways, presumably to increase the buying of their products. But that would not be a “minus-mist”. Again, I enjoyed your imagery.

Misty created imagery as well - of Mary reviewing her poor mark, alone in the glade. While my glade became a spa, her glade was a place of reckoning and determination to do better. Having had four years of high school Latin, I can attest to the work required to get an A. I loved Latin and had a great teacher; similarly Mary’s teacher encouraged her along.

On rereading my poem after doing the CW, I smiled at the AAH. Yes, OMK, it does seem to be a curious spa.

OMK- in large classes of a difficult subject or a sub-par prof, the Bell curve can reward a group of students who were working hard but not totally understanding the subject. It should be an indication either that the exam was too hard, or the teaching is not clear.
But I agree that in smaller classes, it should not be needed or used (too small a sample size to be fair?).

OMK and CanadianEh!, you both really seemed to enjoy the effects of a spa in your verses. Good for you! And I loved your experiences with teaching classes. What great teachers you both must have been!
